Actors' Summit Theater announces opening of Dylan Thomas'
A Child's Christmas in Wales
Actors' Summit announces the opening of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in
Wales in an adaptation by Jeremy Brooks and Adrian Mitchell. The opening
night performance will be on Friday, November 23, the day after Thanksgiving.
Performances continue Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sunday
afternoons at 3:30 PM through December 23.
The Show:
This adaptation of Dylan Thomas' prose recollection of his childhood, was
commissioned by the Great Lakes Theatre Festival when Vincent Dowling was the
artistic director and was first performed there in 1982. The play tells the
story of a single fun-filled Christmas Day in 1930's South Wales, from its
quiet, magical beginning to its sleepy end. The adult Dylan begins by telling
about the way that all of the Christmases of his youth have rolled into a
single ball of memories. "I can never remember whether it snowed for six days
and six nights when I was twelve or twelve days and twelve nights when I was
six."
After a breakfast of cockles and laverbread ("A funny sort of breakfast."),
Dylan plays in the park with his friends and then returns home for the
arrival of his aunts, uncles and cousins. Catastrophe strikes when the turkey
catches fire in the "new gas oven." With a little help from the fire brigade
and a very special aunt, the day is saved.
The play features a dozen traditional carols of the season with new lyrics
suited to the action of the story. The play is filled with family, friends,
food and wonderful music. A perfect holiday outing for the entire family.
