"ANGST '84" IN CHICAGO

ANGST '84, a new play by Cleveland playwright Toni K. Thayer, makes its
Chicago premiere Friday, August 8th, and continues through September 7th at
the Tin Fish Theater, 4247 N. Lincoln Ave. Show times are Friday and
Saturday at 11:00 pm and Sunday at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 ($5 for
students).

This clever adaptation of George Orwell's "1984" brings the stifling
repression of a totalitarian anti-utopia to the halls of a 1980's high
school. Within the walls of Lakeville High, a caustic social commentary is
deftly woven into the nostalgic humor of a John Hughes movie. This "Big
Brother's Breakfast Club" explores the bizarre consequences of placing adult
conflicts and restrictions onto the fragile structure of the teenage world.

In ANGST '84, directed by Rachel Klein, we are offered a voyeuristic glimpse
into the lives of the Lakeville student body, as seen by a snotty, sarcastic
Goth princess. She leads us, locker by locker, through a world where rage,
lust, and self-expression are regulated by the strangling forces of moral
rectitude, and mass conformity. We watch the churning passions of seven
ordinary students as they are throttled by a lifestyle of constant
surveillance and unbreakable routine, escorted by a tour guide who has
already suffered the ultimate punishment for being different: Complete
Erasure.

Rachel Klein has been directing for three years in Cleveland, OH and this
will be her Chicago debut. Her other works have included Normal and Sir
Sheever by Benjamin Spiro, two twisted absurdist comedies with supernatural
undertones. She has also directed Zoo Story by Edward Albee, Naomi in the
Living Room by Christopher Durang, and has coordinated Commedia Dell Arte
demonstrations. She has backgrounds in theater and dance. The cast of ANGST
'84 is an ensemble of energetic actors giving the show a rock solid
backbone.
