      =20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit announces the opening of the regional premiere produc=
tion of=20
COPENHAGEN, the Tony Award winning play by Michael Frayn. The play has a=20
preview performance on Thursday, January 8, and plays through January 25 at=20=
Actors=E2=80=99=20
Summit Theater in downtown Hudson.
=20
The Play=20
COPENHAGEN is based on an event in recent history that is still shrouded in=20
mystery. In September, 1941, in German occupied Denmark, Werner Heisenberg p=
aid=20
a visit to the home of his teacher and mentor Niels Bohr. Both men were=20
theoretical physicists. Heisenberg was in charge of the Nazi atomic weapons=20
program. After the war, no agreement was ever reached as to what the two men=
=20
discussed at that meeting.
            The play attempts to creatively reconstruct, not only what was=20
said at the meeting, but what were the motivations of the participants. The=20
third character in the play is Margrethe Bohr, Niels=E2=80=99 wife and colle=
ague.
            In the course of the play, not only is the 1941 meeting=20
reenacted, but much of the history of nuclear physics in the first half of t=
he 20th=20
century is discussed, as well as the fate of Denmark=E2=80=99s Jewish popula=
tion under=20
the Nazi=E2=80=99s. The work is a fascinating glimpse into the passions of t=
he=20
international scientific community as well as the personal triumphs and trag=
edies of=20
the families involved.
