CLEVELAND'S OFFICIAL OSCAR NIGHT(R) PARTY TO BENEFIT OIFF
For Immediate Release: January 29, 2004
Contact: Annetta Marion or Bernadette Gillota, Co-Founding Artistic
Directors of Independent Pictures, presenter of the OIFF, (216) 651-
7315
Cleveland, Ohio-You don't have to live in Hollywood to experience
the magic and excitement of Oscar Night. Residents of Cleveland can
join in the festivities when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences stages its 76th Academy Awards(R) Presentation on Sunday,
February 29, 2004, by attending Cleveland's own
Academy-sanctioned Oscar Night(R) America party. The Cleveland party
is one of 46 official parties that will be held across the country on
Oscar Night.
Benefiting the Ohio Independent Film Festival, and hosted by
filmmaker Robert C. Banks, Jr. and Donald C. Shingler, D.D.S. (who
was just highlighted this past December in the Plain Dealer's
Sunday Magazine for his attention to worthy causes), the Cleveland
Oscar Night celebration will be held, complete with spectacular views
of Cleveland and Lake Erie, in the Tower at the Tower Press Building,
1900 Superior Avenue, beginning at 7pm. Tickets ($25) are now on
sale by calling Nina Yancer at (440) 323-2032. Call now to get
tickets; space is limited and the event is expected to sell out.
The Cleveland audience will watch the Academy Awards telecast with
support from WEWS, the Cleveland affiliate of the ABC Television
Network, which broadcasts the Academy Awards. ABC and the Academy
are cooperating for the eleventh year with local charities for these
official Oscar Night viewing parties. This year marks the eighth
year that the Cleveland party has been officially sanctioned by the
Academy.
"Watching the Academy Awards Show is one of the great American
traditions," says Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis.
"Since the public can't come to Los Angeles to attend the
Awards Presentation, we created Oscar Night America, which allows
these local parties to tie into the excitement of Oscar Night and to
support some very worthy causes." Official Oscar Night parties
last year raised over $1.7 million for local charities in 37 cities.
All money raised stays in the community; none of it goes to the
Academy.
The Academy will make available to party guests in Cleveland the same
official program distributed to guests seated at the Kodak Theatre at
Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood, California. Copies of the 76th
Academy Awards commemorative poster, designed by Burton Morris, will
also be available in Cleveland. In addition, guests may feel like
stars themselves, dressed in fashion-forward black tie optional
attire, as they are entertained by WEWS-TV 5 News Anchor Tonya Strong
and sustain themselves with wine and appetizers.
"Oscar Night generates excitement all over the world," says
host Donald C. Shingler. "With the Academy's help, our guests
will feel like they are part of the A-list. On Oscar Night there
will be two places to be: Cleveland's Oscar Night America and the
Academy Awards (themselves) in Los Angeles."
