This weekend only enjoy two shows for the price of one! New World Performance Lab opens Deathwatch by Jean Genet and Stairway to Paradise (A Cabaret Soul Journey) at the Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall on The University of Akron campus. Buy a $10 ticket for one show and see the second show for free! Just present your program from the first show at the box office!

Performances of Deathwatch are Oct. 7-9 and 15-16 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.

James Slowiak, NWPL artistic director, will direct the Deathwatch cast that includes Jairo Cuesta, a Colombian actor and co-director of the company, and Christopher Buck and Justin Hale, NWPL apprentices.

Deathwatch was Genet’s first play, and he re-wrote it shortly before his death in 1986. “Deathwatch tells the story of three prisoners who are locked in a sacrificial rite of passage from division to wholeness,” says Slowiak. “It is an intimate and intense experience that will demonstrate our company’s unique physical acting style that has won acclaim on four continents.”

In repertory with Deathwatch will be Stairway to Paradise, A Cabaret Soul Journey. Performances are Oct. 9 and 16 at 10:30 p.m., Oct. 10 at 2 p.m., and Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. in Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall.

Stairway to Paradise will feature NWPL apprentice student Megan Elk singing from the songbooks of Arlen, Berlin, Gershwin and Weil. Elk and UA percussion alumnus Ronald Martin will weave story and song in ways that links the sacred to the profane, the soul to the body, and the Jewish experience to American popular song.

Seating for Deathwatch and Stairway to Paradise is limited to 50 for each performance to create an intimate experience for the audience.
