Tom and Susana Evert Dance Theatre to present Day of the Dead Celebration

Tom & Susana Evert Dance Theatre will present the Festival of Dia de los=20
Muertos ("Day of the Dead") in collaboration with Alejandro Rivera Photograp=
hy,=20
the week of October 24th through 30th at Sagrada Familia Church. This event=20=
is=20
designed to build an understanding of Hispanic cultural traditions through t=
he=20
presentation of a variety of art forms, including dance/theatre, music, the=20
visual arts, and workshops for the community.=20
http://www.EvertDance.com

The culminating event on Saturday, October 30th, unlike any Cleveland has=20
seen before, will feature a re-sized and revised version of the Everts=20
award-winning production Alma de la Tierra ("Soul of the Land") with a cast=20=
of 10=20
dancers, installations of typical Mexican altars by Alejandro Rivera and par=
tner,=20
Jeannie Petrus-Rivera, who will create and direct the installation of=20
beautifully elaborated altars by various community groups and individuals in=
 the=20
transformed festival hall, and dancing with Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Band.

"ALMA DE LA TIERRA" is a dance/theatre work that has elements of fantasy and=
=20
myth presented in a magic-realistic form characteristic of Latin America's=20
primary literary movement. Performed by a wonderful cast of ten dancers/acto=
rs,=20
this mesmerizing production creates a world that is familiar, yet dreamlike.=
 An=20
exploration of Latino culture, this artistic, cultural celebration fuses=20
modern, folk and classical dance, poetry, song, fantastic effects and costum=
es and=20
is a feast for the senses for audiences of all ages.=A0=20

"Tom and Susana Evert draw us into a world of intimacy and depth, where hear=
t=20
and soul are revealed in human terms, and where we can witness the=20
nitty-gritty of the struggle to be vulnerable, in love and in one's spiritua=
l life. And=20
all this is done with great skill, and taste, and humor .Mr. Evert is a rare=
=20
breed in this day and age - a true craftsman. It's no accident that he is a=20
sculptor as well as a dancer. When he moves, he is carefully shaping his bod=
y,=20
and the surrounding space, to create images that are clear and evocative. Wh=
ile=20
his background with Paul Taylor serves him well in his precision and strengt=
h=20
of movement, Tom also adds a self-effacing vulnerability seldom seen in male=
=20
dancers, and which, in their many duets, is a useful foil for his partner=20
Susana's wonderfully brash and outgoing character. His group efforts have th=
e=20
quality of whirlpools, watery and circular and mesmerizing, like the Philip=20=
Glass=20
music he often sets them to. =A0 =A0 Susana Evert dances boldly. And brightl=
y. From=20
her delightful lip-synching of Celia Cruz, to her solo invocations of the=20
divine spirit, she grabs your attention, and draws you in. In her dances wit=
h her=20
partner Tom, she can morph from surrendered lover to angst-driven fury and=20
back again in a split second - leaving no doubt that she has lived both=20
characters. Her face is almost never neutral - it's as expressive as the res=
t of her,=20
and sometimes audibly so. While capable of statuesque and fiery beauty, she'=
s=20
not afraid to get down and roll around on the floor, either - a sign of the=20
vulnerability that makes her dancing so potent a communication. And as a=20
choreographer, her work in "Alma de la Tierra" (co-created with husband Tom)=
=20
communicates the full range of her Mexican heritage, from fleshy sensuality=20=
to
spirit-filled Catholicism"=A0 THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE ( April, 2004)

Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico and other Latin-American=20
countries since Pre-Hispanic times. During this important celebration, peopl=
e honor=20
their deceased family members through the installation of altars, special=20
foods , music and dance, and by visiting the cemeteries.=20
