<P><FONT size=3D6>New World Performance Laboratory announces a Workshop in =
Performance Ecology in residence at the beautiful Camp Asbury in Northeaste=
rn Ohio, April 1-3, 2005</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=3D5>New World Performance Lab will conduct a three day worksh=
op in Performance Ecology in residence at Camp Asbury the weekend of April =
1-3, 2005.   Pre-registration is from February 7 through March 1.=
  Participation is limited.  Cost of the workshop is $200.  =
This includes two nights of lodging and six meals (dinner on Friday through=
 lunch on Sunday).  The workshop begins Friday after dinner and contin=

<P><FONT size=3D4>Performance Ecology  is Jairo Cuesta=B4s term for a =
line of research he has conducted since working in Jerzy Grotowski=B4s =93T=
heater of Sources=94 He traces the word ecology to its greek root oikos (ho=
use) and relates Performance Ecology to humanity=B4s increasing alienation =
from the=94first house=94 -- the body  in the natural environment. </F=
ONT></P>
<P><FONT size=3D4>Performance Ecology is designed around the rudimentary pe=
rformative elements concerning one=B4s humanness and relationship with the =
physical world.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=3D4>Performance Ecology seeks to liberate the dormant energy =
and creative impulses in the participant/performer -- in solitude, in compa=
ny, with the space or with the partner.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=3D4>Performance Ecology involves creative training in the bas=
ic elements of the actor=B4s craft: physical exercise, voice work, attentio=
n and perception, precision and flow, seeing, listening, meeting and the mo=
ntage of physical actions.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=3D4>Performance Ecology is more than a workshop; it is a perf=
ormance event that encourages the task of creating active culture.</FONT></=
P>
<P><FONT size=3D4>Jairo Cuesta and James Slowiak have constructed a structu=
ral tool that builds community and compassion while exploring the participa=
nt=B4s individuality, creativity, and cultural dignity.</FONT></P>

d pedagogical programs, to research performance techniques from around the =

<DIV><FONT size=3D4>The New World Performance Laboratory (NWPL), under the =
artistic direction of James Slowiak and Jairo Cuesta, is an evolving commun=
ity of theatre artists. The company's work has been featured in <EM>The Dra=
ma Review</EM>, <EM>Grotowski's Objective Drama Research </EM>by Lisa Wolfo=
rd, and <EM>The Grotowski Sourcebook</EM>, edited by Richard Schechner and =
Lisa Wolford. Since 1992, NWPL has toured its performances and conducted wo=
rkshops in Italy, Poland, France, Belgium, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Romania, Wale=
s, Brazil, Colombia, and various cities in the USA, including Chicago and N=

<P align=3Dleft><STRONG>James Slowiak</STRONG> </I>is currently Professor o=
f Theatre at the University of Akron and Co-Artistic Director of New World =
Performance Laboratory. From 1983 to 1989, Mr. Slowiak served as assistant =
to Jerzy Grotowsky in all facets of the Focused Research Program in Objecti=
ve Drama at the University of California=96Irvine and at the Workcenter of =
Jerzy Grotowski.in Pontedera, Italy. Mr. Slowiak=92s work in collaboration =
with Grotowski is discussed in several articles and books, including a new =
work for Routledge=92s Performance Practitioners series he is coauthoring w=
ith Jairo Cuesta.</P>
<P class=3DMsoNormal><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; ms=

 a Colombian actor and director.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">  </=
SPAN>He collaborated with <B>Jerzy Grotowski</B> in the Theatre of Sources =
and the Objective Drama Program from 1976 to 1986, working in Poland, Franc=
e, Italy, Mexico, Haiti, and the USA.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbs=
p; </SPAN>He participated in preliminary workshops for <I>The Mahabarata</I=
> in Paris, under the direction of <B>Peter Brook</B>.<SPAN style=3D"mso-sp=
acerun: yes">  </SPAN>Mr. Cuesta has been a guest artist at The Univer=
sity of Paris; the University of California-Irvine; The Colorado College; E=
ckerd College; Case Western Reserve University; and The University of Akron=
 where he directed <B>Samuel Beckett's</B> <I>Endgame</I>.<SPAN style=3D"ms=

in Performance Ecology and actor training techniques around the world.<SPAN=

Camp Asbury is conveniently located two miles southwest of Hiram, Ohio, in =
northern portage County.  It is easily accessible from the Ohio turnpi=
ke (exit 13A), US Route 422 extension, and State Routes 82 and 88.  Th=
e camp is approximately a one-hour drive from the Akron, Canton, Cleveland =
and Youngstown areas.  Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Akr=
on/Canton Regional Airport are each about a one-hour drive from Camp Asbury=
.  Pittsburgh International Airport is located about 100 miles from th=
e camp.</FONT></P>
