The award winning Irving Berlin musical, tells the story of Annie Oakley, a
true-life western hero who was both born and died in Ohio.

According to her biography, Annie Oakley was a remarkable woman by any
right. Her mother fell on hard times when she was young and Annie used her
father’s old Kentucky rifle to hunt small game to sell. She was so
successful, she paid off her mother’s mortgage at the age of 15. She also
befriended Chief Sitting Bull (who defeated Custer at Little Big Horn) who
adopted her as his daughter and gave her the name “Little Sure Shot” (she
was only five feet tall). She was active in the woman’s suffrage movement,
in raising money for the Red Cross (the family dog, Dave, became the Red
Cross Dog, by sniffing out donations of cash hidden in handkerchiefs) and
also offered to form a women’s regiment during both the Spanish American War
and WWI (both offers were refused). Her story lives on in books museums and
the many productions of the show Annie Get Your Gun.

The show has been called “Irving Berlin’s greatest achievement in the
theater,” and it follows Annie’s story as she rises to fame by defeating
famed sharp shooter Frank Butler (whom she defeated and married in real
life). She betrays that she is an uncultivated female who only knows to do
that which comes naturally to her – shooting things. Frank is a big,
sentimental fellow who is attracted only to sweet and demure girls –
preferably without guns. Annie finds Frank appealing, but seems to be a bit
too independent for him. They do have one thing in common though, show
business, and along with Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull, Pawnee Bill and other
great characters from history and beyond, they provide a great time for all
and a little bit of history.

Annie Oakley’s feats in real life were as legendary as her feats in the
show. At thirty paces she shot a dime from between her husbands thumb and
forefinger with a .22 rifle. Once she hit 943 out of 1000 flying balls in a
rapid fire demonstration. Annie died in Greenville, Ohio on November 3,
1926. Frank Butler died eighteen days later. They are buried side by side,
and the show lives on to tell the story of how they met and thrilled
audiences.
