Campy ‘Bat Boy’ drips with
wild, warped humor
Sunday, March 13, 2005
By DAN KANE Repository
entertainment editor
CANTON — A lot of people,
myself among them, like to
complain about how safe and
generic things are around
here.
Multiplex cinemas, chain
restaurants, strip malls ...
you know the drill.
I am here to tell you about
something absolutely nutso and
bold and silly and outrageous
and gleefully rude that is
available right here in our
town: “Bat Boy: The Musical.”
Being staged this weekend and
next in the Players Guild’s
139-seat Arena Theater, “Bat
Boy” is based on a cover story
from the Weekly World News,
the supermarket tabloid rag.
It tells the preposterous and
wildly melodramatic tale of a
half-man, half-bat found in a
cave in West Virginia, and of
a housewife’s well-intentioned
but misguided attempt to
mainstream this freak boy into
a small-minded backwoods burg.
It is difficult to convey in
words how crazy and campy is
this show, which combines
elements of cult midnight
movies and low-budget horror
flicks with hokey, soaring
Broadway balladry of the “Miss
Saigon” variety. One dramatic
number is sung by the Bat Boy
with his mouth dripping blood,
a severed cow’s head in hand.
There are hints of “The
Elephant Man” and “My Fair
Lady” as the Bat Boy becomes
domesticated and faces extreme
prejudice and suspicion from
the townsfolk. There is
cross-dressing, and a
hand-clapping gospel
production number, and an
interspecies orgy that defies
description.
It is very much a
mature-audiences-only
endeavor, and great fun if you
go in for that “Rocky Horror
Show,” “Mad TV,” John Waters
kind of warped humor.
The cast is utterly committed
to this deep silliness, and
enhances the humor by playing
things as straight as
possible. Jonathan Tisevich, a
professional actor who has
starred in touring productions
of “Titanic” and “The Full
Monty,” is focused, intense
and impressive as Bat Boy, a
role that is challenging
vocally, comedically and
physically.
Amy Sima-Dirham, who directed
the show, inspires frequent
laughter as Meredith Parker, a
wholesome, ever-upbeat
housewife who is hiding a big
secret. John Popa is witty and
wily as her sexually
frustrated husband, a
syringe-wielding veterinarian.
Megan Rosenberg displays solid
singing talent as the couple’s
teen daughter Shelley, who
falls deeply in love with the
pointy-eared bloodsucker
living under her roof.
Stephen Becker is a standout
in several roles, including a
high-energy evangelist who
attempts to save the Bat Boy
at a revival meeting, and a
hysterical mother whose
children are mysteriously
falling dead around her.
Becker is eager to take things
well over the top. Steve
Sterling, also in multiple
roles, is a comic treat as an
animated gal named Lorraine,
complete with long hair,
dress, pocketbook and beard.
