Receives $50,000 Grant from Chicago's 

Joyce Foundation to Commission New Dance 

CLEVELAND, OH (January 24, 2006) - DANCECleveland has been named recipient
of the prestigious JOYCE AWARD, which supports Midwest cultural
organizations in commissioning new works by artists of color. The $50,000
grant, awarded by the Chicago based Joyce Foundation, is among four awards
granted this year, other grants support music, theater and visual arts
commissions.  DANCECleveland Executive Director Pamela Young says, "We are
so honored to receive this coveted award and in turn, we offer the new work,
and ongoing outreach programs, in celebration of our 50 year history of
presenting the best in national and international modern dance companies."

To celebrate the award, DANCECleveland will host an event with northeast
Ohio community leaders and media on Thursday, January 26, 4:30-6 pm at
Cleveland's Wyndham Hotel.  Honored guest at the event, Urban Bush Women
dancer Nora Chipaumire, who recently returned from initial work on the new
dance in Senegal, Africa, will talk with attendees about the commission.
Chipaumire, a native of Zimbabwe and graduate of the University of
Zimbabawe's school of law, has lived in Cuba, Jamaica and now resides in
California.

GRANT FUNDS - DANCECleveland will commission a new work by African-American
choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder, choreographer and artistic
director of the award winning dance company Urban Bush Women.  Zollar will
work in collaboration with acclaimed Senegalese choreographer Germaine
Acogny and her company, Compagnie JANT-BI, drawing on West African
movements, rhythms, and styles. The award also provides for a two week
Creative Space Grant allowing the two dance companies to develop their work
in an intensive, collaborative process in Northeast Ohio.  DANCECleveland
and Young Audiences of Greater Cleveland will provide a dance residency for
Urban Bush Women to work directly with middle and high school students of
the Cleveland Municipal School District.  Northeast Ohio audiences will also
enjoy a full range of outreach programs including a pre-performance lecture,
post-performance Q and A session, a Master Class for professional and
pre-professional dance students, with all culminating in a premiere of the
new work in performances by the Urban Bush Women in Cleveland, Ohio. 

URBAN BUSH WOMEN - Based in Brooklyn, NY, Urban Bush Women is an
internationally recognized performance ensemble that creates and performs
dance-theater works inspired by women's experiences, African-American
history, and the cultural influences of the African Diaspora. Its education
and community programs address social issues and difficult historical truths
while seeking to build community and leadership through art. Founder Jawole
Willa Jo Zollar earned her bachelor's degree in dance from the University of
Missouri at Kansas City and her master's degree in dance from Florida State
University, where she now holds the Nancy Smith Fichter tenured
professorship in dance. She has created nearly 30 works for Urban Bush Women
as well as dances for companies as diverse as Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theater, Dayton Contemporary Dance and Philadanco.  Urban Bush Women has
performed extensively in throughout the United States, Asia, Australia,
Europe and South America.

DANCECLEVELAND - Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, DANCECleveland is one of
a handful of national arts presenters dedicated exclusively to presenting
contemporary and modern dance. DANCECleveland presents an annual series of
international and national dance companies at Cleveland's Playhouse Square
Center, hosts master classes for professional and pre-professional dance
students, public forums, residencies for city school students and
educational performances for the community. To participate in the creation
and presentation of Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's new work is a significant
milestone in DANCECleveland's 50-year history of presenting modern and
cutting edge dance.  

JOYCE FOUNDATION - DANCECleveland's proposal was chosen from more than 50
applications submitted, under the review of independent arts advisors from
outside the Midwest region.  Launched in 2004 as an annual competition, the
Joyce Awards target cultural organizations in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit,
Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and St. Paul/Minneapolis and one each is awarded in
dance, music, theater, and visual arts. "This year's recipients of the Joyce
Awards present a diverse and socially conscious group of projects," said
Ellen Alberding, Joyce Foundation president. "We are pleased to present
these artists and organizations with Joyce Awards, part of our continuing
commitment to support the creation of important new and engaging work by
artists of color.  We look forward to the completed works, and the related
programming, which we anticipate will draw new audiences to these
outstanding institutions."
