I often ask myself the same question as Joe and have read the responses, but I think maybe what is being asked is being missed. Like Joe, I do theater for FUN - its not a career and is not going to be a career. While I understand the need to "practice" or "be seen" especially for those of you who have an interest in doing theater in some professional capacity, those of us who do this as an extra hobby don't necessarily have the time.

When I hear through the grapevine that a show is essentially pre-cast I don't even show up. Why? Its going to be a waste of my time to spend four or more ours of one of my nights when I probably should be getting other work done. IF a director pre-casts fine - I don't care - but it better be told in the audition notice. I have tried going to these auditions in the past and EVERY SINGLE TIME who I heard was pre-cast was actually cast in those roles.

So I guess the real question is - should a director be required to inform auditinee's that parts are pre cast.

--- mjr64 at adelphia.net wrote:

From: "Michael Rubin " <mjr64 at adelphia.net>
To: <neohiopal at lists.fredsternfeld.com>
Subject: [NEohioPAL]Re:Theatre question
Date: Thu, 4 May 2006 19:58:00 -0400

Three major reasons to attend an audition even if theatre does not disclose casting decisions ahead of time.

A good director will test you to see if directable Maybe reading a part for which you're not a fit( 40 year old reading a grandpa role)just so others in the cast can read a possible part.(Translation-are you a team player?).Read the off role with same respect as the role you really want. They will keep your professionalism in mind when casting another show.

Second, networking. You will meet others in the lobby or holding.Get to know people.

Finally, and as mentioned before, any audition is good practice.Take an audition class from the folks who advertise on this list.
