Summer Stock is a program in which teenagers come together to =
produce, create, and perform a play within two weeks. It is quite a =
challenge, but the talent and accomplishment is quite apparent in the =
performances and effort that is put forth to produce such an extensive =
play together in a mere two weeks.

This year's Summer Stock production is directed by Robert J. Putka, =
who has directed, produced and designed 45 plays at Stow-Munroe Falls =
High School where he is the Drama Club Advisor . This is his first =
project at Weathervane and we are pleased to welcome him here.Spoon =
River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters is a collection of unusual, short, =
free-form poems that, as a whole, describe the life of the fictional =
small town of Spoon River. Each poem is an epitaph of a dead citizen, =
delivered by the dead themselves. They speak about the sorts of things =
one might discuss between friends in present day. Some recite their =
histories and turning points, others make observations of life from the =
outside, and others complain of the treatment of their graves, while few =
tell how they really died. The complex interplay of various villagers (a =
bright and successful man crediting his parents for all he's =
accomplished, and an old woman weeping ~ he is secretly her illegitimate =
child) forms a gripping, if not pretty, whole.

The work features such characters as Tom Merritt, Amos Sibley, Carl =
Hamblin, and Fiddler Jones. Many of the characters who make appearances =
in Spoon River Anthology were based on real people that Masters knew or =
heard of in the two towns in which he grew up, Petersburg and Lewistown, =
Illinois. Most notable is Ann Rutledge, regarded in local legend to be =
Abraham Lincoln's early love interest though there is no actual proof of =
such a relationship.=20

As the play concludes, we are left with the feeling that we have =
learned an entire history of a town that hustled and bustled with =
secrets, plotting, love, murder, births, and most importantly, deaths. =
The audience has learned the history behind what is.Spoon River.

"But you're haunted, you're hunted,
Wherever you roam
Spoon River, Spoon River
Is calling you home."
