Chagrin Foundation for Arts & Culture Announces Winter Programming

"Chagrin Arts" Series Features Noteworthy Lectures, Music, and Dance

 

            December 31, 2007 - Chagrin Falls, Ohio - The Chagrin Foundation
for Arts & Culture has announced its "Chagrin Arts" winter series that will
bring select programs to Chagrin Falls including speakers in the Chautauqua
tradition, musicians from the renowned Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and
the acclaimed GroundWorks Dancetheater.

            "The Chagrin Foundation is pleased to continue to bring stellar
arts programming to the Chagrin Valley.  Our first winter series features
nationally recognized speakers, musicians and dancers-and further supports
our commitment to arts partnerships, our community, and the region," notes
Christina Thoburn, Executive Director of the Foundation.  

            The Chagrin Foundation, created to promote, support, and
encourage the development of arts and culture as integral contributors to
the quality of life and economic well-being of the Chagrin Valley, presents
programs that encourage artistic collaborations and add to the region's
cultural enrichment.  Its broader, long-term vision is to create an Arts &
Entertainment District in Chagrin Falls.

 

"Chagrin Arts" Winter Series

            The "Chagrin Arts" winter series begins on Saturday, January 26,
with "Chautauqua Saturday", a daylong lecture series hosted at venues
throughout Chagrin Falls.  Building upon the success of last summer's
Chautauqua-in-Chagrin series and billed as a "one-day spa for your mind,"
the day's speakers include Ralph G. Williams, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of
English at the University of Michigan and frequent speaker with the Royal
Shakespeare Company; Ori Z. Soltes, professorial lecturer in Fine Arts and
Theology at Georgetown University and former Director and Curator of the
National Jewish Museum; Ross W. Duffin, Kulas Professor of Music at Case
Western Reserve University; and The Honorable William Purcell, former Mayor
of Nashville.  Additionally, and in the Chautauqua tradition of the Young
Readers Program, the Chagrin Falls Library hosts the free "Ashanti to Zulu:
African Traditions," with an interactive drum performance by Rhythm Culture.
Gate passes for the entire day are $40 for preferred seating and reception
with speakers and $25 for general seating.  Individual lecture tickets, if
available, will go on sale at $10/lecture on January 21.  Complimentary
shuttle bus service is provided from venue to venue.

On Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m., Chagrin Arts presents "Artists from
Oberlin: Darrett Adkins and Friends" at the United Methodist Church of
Chagrin Falls.  The program includes works by Schubert, Beethoven and others
and features Oberlin faculty musicians Darrett Adkins and Amir Eldan on
cello, David Bowlin and Marilyn McDonald on violin and Karen Ritscher on
viola.  Tickets are $18/adults and $10/students.  

The series finale on Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the newly-opened
Performing Arts Center of Chagrin Falls High School features a performance
by GroundWorks Dancetheater.  Hailed as one of "25 to watch" nationally by
Dance Magazine, GroundWorks performs "Latitude" by Artistic Director David
Shimotakahara with live music accompaniment by Hal Walker, the virtual one
man band from Kent Ohio; a new work by Artistic Associate Amy Miller; and
the ever-popular "Always" by New York guest artist Gina Gibney, set to the
music of vocal legend Patsy Cline.  Tickets are $18/adults and $10/students.

Faculty musicians from the renowned Oberlin Conservatory of Music bring
their artistry to Chagrin Falls.  The program includes the beloved String
Quintet in C Major by Franz Schubert, Beethoven's Sonata No. 1 in C Major,
Op. 102, for Cello and Piano, and other works to be announced.

 

GroundWorks Dancetheater

GroundWorks Dancetheater, hailed as one of "25 to watch" nationally by Dance

most talked about professional contemporary dance company, GroundWorks
