DEAR FRIENDS AND FELLOW MUSIC LOVERS:

Some of you may have received a similar email from me last year, when singer/songwriter, Jen Chapin, last appeared in Cleveland. Well, this time around, it’s the fine folks at Nighttown, in Cleveland Heights, that will present Jen and her trio, for a concert, this Thursday, October 2nd, 2008, at 7pm.

If you’re receiving this email, it’s possible that you appear on one of several lists I used to promote the last concert. Or, possibly you’re a friend, friend of a friend, or you’ve been targeted, because you or someone you know enjoys seriously great music, and would seriously enjoy a seriously great show, by a seriously great songwriter and performer, in seriously great times—such as these we’re living in!

At that time, I wrote:

“If you’re not already familiar with Jen’s music… you should be! Artistically, Jen is not to be categorized… she is an immensely talented singer/songwriter—offering a healthy combo of folk, jazz, and blues, all rolled into one concise and pleasing musical package! Her passion and sensuality, combined with prolific lyrics and a strong sense of self, and political and social conscience, all comes through most evidently in her music. Jen comes from a long line of celebrated artists and performers, most notably her father, the late singer/songwriter, Harry Chapin. But, far beyond being the kin of musical royalty, Jen is to be recognized and lauded for her own creative vision, and to see her LIVE is truly an understated treat!”

And, as luck would have it—here’s the perfect opportunity to see her LIVE!

The Jen Chapin Trio—including the masterful bass of Stephan Crump, and virtuoso guitarist Jamie Fox, will perform in this intimate setting, for one Cleveland performance only.

If you to plan to attend the show, and/or graze on Nighttown’s exquisite cuisine, it is highly suggested that you call for reservations, to ensure a spot.

Of her third release, Ready, one reviewer wrote:

“Witha sound that is exceedingly difficult to categorize, Ready excites the listener with a stylistic range that crosses folk, soul, jazz, and light funk with R&B and blues. It’s a mixture that works quite well with her versatile and refreshing voice. She has been compared to the likes of Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, and even Tori Amos, but these kinships fail to describe her as an artist.”
(Kirk deCordova, The Music Box)

And, of her forth, and most recent release, Light of Mine, another wrote:

“The Brooklyn singer-songwriter turns interpreter, delving into the meaning of patriotism and the legacy of American protest music with clean, unplugged readings of Springsteen’s “American Skin” and “Born in the U.S.A.” and Stevie Wonder’s “You Haven’t Done Nothin’.” Backed by bassist-husband Stephan Crump and his elegant, economical Rosetta Trio, Chapin vivifies her acoustic living-room aesthetic with rock-and-soul bite and the aim of a larger narrative, folding three originals into a mix that includes Radiohead’s “Backdrifts,” John Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me” and Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.”

Also, listen to an interview with Jen Chapin on "Around Noon" with host Dee Perry, on WCPN 90.3FM, on Thursday, October 2nd, at 12:00 Noon.

So, there you have it—in a world of on-again, off-again debates, one thing requires no debate—Jen Chapin is one performer to see, and Thursday night, Nighttown, is the place to be! Be the next to join an ever-growing legion of fans— one new listener at a time! You won’t be sorry, and you can thank me on Thursday! Hope to see you there and then!

Sincerely,

Chuck Fink
