[NEohioPAL] Berko: The errant ? marks

For good or ill, this has to originate in the software you're using, which
must be using "advanced" (decades old, actually) character sets. Some email
processing programs can't handle the more advanced character sets.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know exactly which email software is at
fault: it could be yours, the software that NEOPAL uses to forward your
emails to us, or the complaining recipient's email program (that would
include mine, by the way).

It sounds like you create a text in a normal word processor using a feature
like "Convert quotes to Smart Quotes" or whatever, so that you get
close-quotes that are the opposite orientation from the open-quotes. This
is something you'd have to turn off in modern word processors; and I don't
think you really want to, or the text won't look like you want it to.

You say that you've tried using a plain-text word processor, or at least
cut-and-pasted into one, but I suspect that you are using something like
WordPad (or its Mac equivalent) which is nominally plain text, but actually
preserves the special characters. You'll want to use something much dumber,
like NotePad.

Things *never* go as planned (that's why they call them "plans").

Subject: [NEohioPAL] Berko: The errant ? marks

To those who have e-mailed asking about the ? marks in my reviews where
quote marks and apostrophe's should appear. I note that my reviews are not
the only place that these changes in punctuation appear. I've written to
Fred about the distraction of those marks and I've been told there is
nothing that can be done. I've tried using three different versions of
Word and a Text Edit program, all to no avail. If anyone has a suggestion
for adjusting the problem please let me know.
