Magnificat High School's current run of "Aida" is one the finest
productions performed by any high school in this area. Although the
staging, some might say, is simplistic, it works well. The costumes are
magnificent, but what really sets this production apart is the plethora of
talent on stage and the beautiful music of Elton John and Tim Rice. And I
would be remiss not to mention the intricate choreography that was splendid.
The roles of *Aida*, played by *Elizabeth Sweeney,* and her love interest, *
Radames,* played by *Brennen Kilbane* (Fairview High School) are nothing
short of outstanding. (Be prepared to be blown away!) It is no wonder
that this show while playing on Broadway won numerous awards including four
Tony awards as well as Best Musical Score, besides being the longest
running musical.
Although the show is performed in two acts and is based on the Giuseppe
Verdi's opera by the same name, the musical actually originated from a
children's storybook. (To be clear, this is not an opera.)
Anyone who appreciates Elton John and Tim Rice will love this production.
And anyone who loves excellent musical theater will as well. Kudos to
director Amy Smialek, costumer Mary Papa, choreographer Jill Haller, as
well as set designer Shawn Delaney. Job well done!
