"Trouble in Mind"
By Alice Childress
Directed by Michael Oatman
Making its stage debut in 1955, Trouble in Mind is a race-relations dramedy that very nearly made Alice Childress the first black woman playwright to have a show produced on Broadway. The story details the social and psychological pressures a mixed-race troupe of actors faces while prepping a well-meaning but visibly stereotyped anti-lynching melodrama for its Broadway debut.
