REVIEW: 'SHOUT The Mod Musical' Boldly Brings Back Memories of the Swingin'
Sixties
 

Okay, so none of the cast members of SHOUT! The Mod Musical -- now being
presented at Western Reserve Playhouse -- were even born when the songs they
sing were hits. And not one of the five actress-performers are from England.
And these contemporary ladies would never be caught dead in the dated
hairstyles and miniskirts they wear as their characters on stage.

But no matter -- by the end of Act Two, audience members will swear they were
blown away by British birds singing the hits of the Swingin' Sixties. 

SHOUT! The Mod Musical is a perfect summertime escape for anyone
who loves music, memories, and nostalgia. Like an all-girl episode of Laugh-In,
the psychedelic trip through time touches on such diverse subjects as advice
columns, feminism, and Paul McCartney.

The song list tells you right away you are in for an even of classic pop songs,
and includes “You Don’t Have to Say You
Love Me,” “To Sir With Love,” “Goldfinger,” “I Only Want To Be With You,”
“Downtown,” and “Son of a Preacher Man.” But there is plenty of humor and just
enough heart in the book by Phillip George and David Lowenstein to elevate the
show to more than just a revue.

The quirky yet classy quintet -- saucy Jessica
Harris, sultry Molly Weidig, sassy Kim Medellin, sexy Tina Starkey, and sweet
MaryBeth G. Hobson -- take viewers through each year of the decadent decade
through music, dance, and comedic interludes. Their slyly seductive
harmonies blend together with the terrific threesome on the bandstand, under
the guidance of musical director John Ebner. Vintage voice work is provided by
Keith Stiver and Jen Ryan.

Marc C. Howard is the director and choreographer who
is responsible for this latest success story at the Western Reserve
Playhouse. He captures the essence of the era in every scene and infuses
the musical numbers with both retro dance steps and physical
