Jerusalem at Ensemble

Steven, One of the hallmarks of immaturity in theater and in life, is an acceptance and promulgation of absolutes. For anyone to proclaim, as you do, that any individual who finds something redeeming in a play and a production you dismiss knows nothing about theater speaks volumes about your experience, intelligence, and artistic maturity. The credibility of your position is further weakened by your ad hominem attacks on the director. I've been doing theater for a while now and I'm still never sure if what I'm seeing is what the director intended. I have been fortunate to see a good deal of the work of Ensemble Theater over the past 25 years. As with any theater, I've enjoyed some shows more than others. My experiences in the past and my respect for the artists involved in Jerusalem make it extremely difficult for me to give your comments the credibility you seem to expect. Finally, who are you? If you believe that your view of the production is fair and accurate, why don't you take ownership of your opinions, no matter how poorly written and organized they may be? Neil Thackaberry

Ensemble's Jerusalem Fizzles

The Ensemble Theatre's production of Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth, directed by Ian Hinz, is one big, messy, long evening. The action is slow, and the production strains very hard for an effect it never manages to achieve. The play revolves around the events of St George's Day in a town on the edge of Salisbury Plain. Johnny "Rooster" Byron is a Romany gypsy, and the town's council have finally arranged the legal essentials to have him evicted to build new housing. On St George's Day, a local fair is held and antics ensue against the background of Johnny's impending eviction. To be truthful, I didn't get Jerusalem's message, if there was one. And in the case of a show that has no discernible meaning, where an over-abundance of lines are heaved around by very inexperienced cast members, coupled with a director who doesn't seem to have a decipherable conceptual message, something is very wrong. The production is just a community theatre romp, with very few poignant moments, and lots of ambiguity. Much too much time is wasted with a cast of idiosyncratic characters whose presence is supposed to give the audience the feeling that what they are watching is risky, edgy and dark. Instead, we get a production that is long-winded, and self-indulgent. Unfortunately, this production serves no one, except the inflated ego of a director, who might have felt that he possesses the Golden Touch to pull off this complicated piece, but in truth, totally missed the mark in terms of the execution and analysis of the text, as well as the casting choices; more competent performers should have filled the roles, ones who can hold their dialects, and bring some originality to their performances. Perhaps in the hands of a more proficient and accomplished director, Jerusalem might have at least been entertaining. So the wrap-up: if someone tells you they loved Jerusalem, they do not know theatre. The production is an incomprehensible blur from which I gleaned no value.

48 Hour Film Project seeking summer interns

Short Film Competition Marketing / Production Internship Description The 48 Hour Film Project is seeking interns for this year’s Cleveland competition. The 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) is the world’s largest timed film competition, now in over 140 cities around the world. Filmmakers have just two days to write, produce, and edit their short films using a genre, character, prop, and line of dialogue that aren’t revealed until Kickoff. All films are screened locally and judged by a panel of film professionals for a variety of awards. The Best Film in each city moves on to the 48HFP’s international competition and festival, Filmapalooza. There, the top films from around the world are screened and judged for a whole new set of prizes, including a chance to screen at Cannes Film Festival. Interns will get a behind-the-scenes look at the marketing and implementation of the festival, while working directly with the Cleveland producer. Additional benefits include networking opportunities, helping to produce screenings and events for the local filmmaking community, and watching and analyzing short films from some of the area’s top filmmakers. The ideal candidate will be self-directed and have a passion for film (filmmaking experience encouraged but not required). Responsibilities - Online outreach and promotion using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media channels - Monitor and post on social media networks, forums, and blogs - Shooting still photography and video footage of 48HFP events - Producing video interviews and trailers - Research and communication with local film groups and meetups - Delivering promotional materials to area theatres and venues - Taking tickets and checking badges at film screenings - Reviewing completed films to verify that required elements have been included Requirements Excellent communication, computer skills, and attention to detail are a must. A background in marketing and/or social media management is a plus. Special consideration given to candidates with a background in filmmaking, especially those with access to their own equipment. Candidates must be comfortable in a remote workplace situation, and must be self-motivated. Internship will run from mid-May through mid-August, with the possibility of extending through early November. The Balladeer is the conscience of America and the champion of the American Dream. He acts as a foil against the assassins and their warped perspectives and actions. The Proprietor - Tenor Gb2-F4; The Proprietor is the Grim Reaper, handing out weapons and overseeing the demise of presidents and assassins alike. His power is in his omnipresence and indifference; his characterization requires both dramatic irony and restrained wit. John Wilkes Booth - Baritone F2-G4; tall and distinguished; character will need a genteel Southern accent. A political zealot, "Wilkes" is the pioneer of American assassination and acts as leader and twisted mentor to the other assassins. "The Ballad of Booth" and his seduction of Lee Harvey Oswald are two of his pivotal scenes. Leon Czolgosz (pronounced "CHOL-gash") - Bass Baritone G#2-G4; slight of build. Czolgosz was an anarchist who, in killing William McKinley, decided to take matters of government into his own hands for the sake of the common man. Important scenes include "The Gun Song" and the meeting with Emma Goldman. Guiseppe Zangara - Tenor B2-A4; a short actor is preferred but not required; MUST use a heavy Italian accent for this character. Zangara blamed capitalists and "kings" for his medical conditions and attempted an assassination of Franklin D. Roosevelt-instead killing Mayor Cermak of Chicago. Zangara has a solo on the electric chair in "How I Saved Roosevelt." Sara Jane Moore - Soprano F3-Eb5. Actress is middle-aged and frumpy. Moore, a former FBI informant five times married, nearly assassinated Gerald Ford in 1975 - the second such attempt on his life in three weeks. Moore provides much of the comic relief in the show and requires an actress with good comic timing. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme - Mezzo A3-G5; slender and pretty. Fromme, a flower child and member of Charlie Manson's cult "family," attempted an assassination of Gerald Ford in 1975. She is the lunatic foil to Sara Jane Moore's airheadedness in several scenes and sings a duet with John Hinckley. John Hinckley - Baritone A2-G4; blond and husky; ability to play guitar is a plus. Hinckley used a sociopathic obsession with Jodie Foster as his excuse to attempt an assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981. Hinckley's clinical insanity and love-sickness add dramatic weight to this character. His pivotal scene is a duet with Squeaky Fromme. Charles J. Guiteau - Tenor A2-Ab4; average in stature; a beard would be helpful but not required. Guiteau was a multi-careered charlatan with delusions of grandeur who assassinated James Garfield in 1882. This intense libertine requires a multi-personality characterization and a flair for the dramatic. His key scene involves a cakewalk to the gallows. Samuel Byck - Heavy set; blue-collar Philly accent required. Byck was disgruntled at government and all it stood for when he attempted to hijack a plane with the intent of crashing it into the Nixon White House. A small vocal role, it requires an actor capable of presenting two dramatic, page-anda-half monologues. For Byck, please choose from the excerpt that fits your vocal range (tenor, baritone, or bass-baritone). Lee Harvey Oswald -Actor is slight to average build; rural Louisiana twang required. Oswald sings in the closing number and requires the dramatic capacity to spar with John Wilkes Booth in the pivotal Book Depository scene. Emma Goldman-Turn-of-the-century anarchist agitator and feminist. Townspeople - Required to play a variety of parts. The "townspeople" require strong individual voices as they sing "How I Saved Roosevelt" and the gut-wrenching "Something Just Broke." Other - A Bartender, President James Garfield, President Gerald Ford, Various reporters, photographers, tourists, bystanders, etc.

About the Summer Theatre CAMP: Down the Rabbit Hole: “Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” Join Wandering Aesthetics’ Education Director and Storyteller Kyle Jozsa as he guides students down the rabbit hole. Using theatrical concepts, including imagination, character creation and teamwork, students will explore the world of Alice in Wonderland culminating in the development of their very own story. This week long summer camp will introduce students to the concepts of live performance. Each morning, in his engaging style, Jozsa will teach students the fundamentals, and some more advanced techniques, of theatre. Each afternoon, students will collaborate to craft their tale in an atmosphere of cooperation and playfulness, culminating in a final performance for friends and family. Students should bring a brown bag lunch. About the Instructor: Kyle Jozsa is the Artistic Director, Education Director and primary Storyteller with Wandering Aesthetics. He began his teaching career in 2010 with Weathervane Playhouse. Jozsa has worked full-time as a preschool teacher, developed curriculum for traditional and non-traditional classes alike and led many workshops for students of all age groups. He currently works as a Teaching Artist for HBTI, The Artful Living Program out of Stark County and as a part-time Instructor at Gymboree in Strongsville. Along with local artists, Jozsa is working to bring a play-based enrichment program to the Akron area.

Ensemble Theatre will present a Touring piece "Lovingly Your's, Langston and Lorraine in Rocky River on the 26th of June. This production will require a bit of rehearsal for the single production on Sunday the 26th and could lead to further opportunities to play the role in future tours that are booked. We are in need of an actress to play the role of *LORRAINE HANSBERRY.* The show consists of two tables with typewriters and is a lively and loving conversation between Langston Hughes and Lorainne Hansberry as both talk about the wonders of their work as writers. *There will be a stipend for this role. * Unfortunately with the current nature of the tour we cannot use any AEA contracts for the roles.
