‘Heathers: The Musical,’ Beck Center’s black farce, slays audiences Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics With its regional premiere production of “Heathers: The Musical,” the Studio Theater in the rear of the Beck Center for the Arts has firmly established itself as a safe haven and the go-to performance space for dark, delightfully deranged musicals. Its reputation was built on past performances of the slightly askew rock musical “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” the bizarre operatic rendition of the syndicated trash talk show “Jerry Springer,” and the splendidly sordid musical versions of the films “Evil Dead” and “Reefer Madness.” But now, with this adaptation of the iconic 1989 cult comedy classic “Heathers,” audiences should forever expect irony, an adrenaline rush and a splash zone when entering the intimate arena. Beck Center for the Arts' Theater Department kicks off our summer session on Monday, June 13! There are still some available spots in our camps but you need to sign soon before they are all gone! Improv is already SOLD OUT ... so don't get shut out! Junior Theater Camp Ages 7 to 12 Monday-Friday; 3 weeks per session; select from the dates below; Tuition: $270 per session Session 1: June 13 - July 1, #4364 12:30 to 2:30 pm* Performances: July 1 at 2:30 & 6:30 pm Session 2: July 25 - August 12, #4365 9:30 to 11:30am* Performances: August 12 at 11:30 am & 6:00 pm The Junior Theater Camp is designed for all students, whether or not they have prior performance experience. Campers work with theater professionals learning about acting, singing, and dancing as they rehearse for their own original show. This fun performance is a culmination of their work and features acting scenes and musical numbers. Actors present this show for family and friends on the last day of camp in the Music & Dance Building Recital Hall. Students will be divided into smaller groups based on age. This two-week workshop focuses on creating a completely improvised performance based on suggestions from a live audience. It's a guaranteed comedy blast! We NEED 15 ACTORS who can improv for a Short Film.

A team of creative collaborators is planning on making a short ten-minute film which includes some juicy opportunities for actors to improv and develop characters for the film (and possibly other future projects). This YET-UNNAMED-PROJECT (the working title is: “Rue The Day”) focuses on time travel, regret and the desire to UNDO our mistakes. The film is based on an anonymous survey where we asked people to answer the question: If you could travel back in time and change one mistake that you made, bad choice that you made, or thing that you said -- what would it be? Filming for most actors will be restricted to one day (tentative filming dates are currently June 29th or July 14th); three actors will be invited back for a half day filming based on some of the improvisational material that emerges during the first day of shooting. We’d like to work with fifteen actors that vary in age, race, size and gender. If you’re interested, please send a headshot and a resume that lists your acting and improv experience. If you want to include a link to video work, that’s great, but not an expectation.
