Casting Three Roles for Short Film

CASTING - Safety Net - 12 minute short film This short film is scheduled to be shot during Labor Day weekend in Canton, Ohio. We anticipate a festival release in January, 2017. This project was one of the finalists in the Cleveland Indie Film Incubator and is partially supported by the generosity of Cleveland Camera Rental and the other sponsoring partners. Contingent upon funding we hope to pay at SAG ultra-low indie rates, however we are open to casting SAG or non-SAG based on the three leads that we select. Other non-speaking roles will be cast later this month. Left his job as a corrections officer a year ago. Jerry makes friends easily and makes everyone around him feel comfortable. He uses humor to deflect trouble, but is a hard-working, trustworthy husband to Felicia, his pregnant wife. In the film, as he tries to find friends and family that will actually help him, he also must face questions and doubts about his own hopes, dreams, and sense of himself. NOTE: Not looking for a dashing classic leading man. Jerry needs to exude an everyman sensibility. Perhaps overweight? FELICIA - Supporting / FEMALE / 28 to 38 Black. Works in a preschool. Eight months pregnant. She sure wouldn’t choose now as a time to lose their house, but she’s also supportive of Jerry and recognizes that he is feeling more pressure than even she is. She’s strong enough to keep her private frustrations from spilling over into him, and smart enough to know what he’s thinking even when he can’t give voice to it. Felicia is artistic, confident and strong. Her style is SINGULAR but PRACTICAL. BRAD - Supporting / MALE / 28 to 38 (Jerry’s age) White. Suit and an open collared shirt in the day and athletic gear at night. Brad owns a manufacturing plant downtown, and lives in a posh newly minted mansion in a gated community far across the city from Jerry and Felicia. He vibes athleticism, optimism and good ol’ boy. He is a well-regarded member of the stately megachurch near the golf course. He and Jerry worked at a camp together for several summers when they were teenagers. PLOT OVERVIEW: Jerry left his job a year ago, and while he’s tried he hasn’t found anything since. He’s been given a week to make an emergency payment or his house will go into foreclosure. His wife is very pregnant and Safety Net opens as Jerry finds out that yet another option won’t pan out. The film follows him as he takes desperate measures to find something….ANYTHING...to salvage his little piece of the American Dream. Remember in It’s A Wonderful Life when George Bailey thought that the Savings and Loan was going belly-up and he would lose everything he had invested in the crummy old house where his wife and kids had pieced together a happy life? It’s that moment for Jerry Harris, but issues of race and class make everything much more complicated in this short film. ABOUT THE EVENT: Blooming from humble beginnings in the basement of a flower shop, the #EPCooker is an artist driven event that sees over 100 audience members, 20+ performances and 6 non-stop hours of art. Registration for performers begins at 7:30 pm. Performances begin between 8:00 - 8:30 pm. Anyone may sign up for a 10-minute slot. Performers may pre-register at watheatre.com/epcooker. An emcee, house drum kit, keyboard and sound system (with operators) are provided. This month’s emcee is one of Firestone Park’s finest: Katie Beck! ALL varieties of acts are encouraged to perform. Previous acts have included: monologues, acoustic musicians, play readings, comedians, experimental art, dancers, scenes from plays, improv, devised work, full rock bands and performance artists. But the sky is the limit; no art is too taboo for the #EPCooker! ALL levels – from beginner to the most experienced – are encouraged to perform. Food and alcohol are permitted in the theatre. ABOUT THE EMCEE: Katie Beck aka K-Beck aka K Beezy is a community-based theatre artist who grew up in Firestone Park and South Akron. She is a 2014 graduate of Allegheny College with her BA in theatre and community and justice studies. (Don't be fooled by the rocks that she got, she's still Katie from the block). Most recently, she co-wrote and directed Into the Mold: a Firestone Park Community-Based Play. This year she was also commissioned by the Year of Meadville (Pennsylvania) to create A Town for Us which premiered at their Community Celebration. Katie took two years of ballet as a child so now she considers herself a professional dancer. She loves black olives, furry cats, and everything Akron. The only cheese she likes is in jokes. Oh. And she contributed an account of community-based theatre in practice to "Developing a Community-Engaged Scholarly Identity," a chapter in the recently published Publicly Engaged Scholars. But no big deal or anything. ABOUT BIGGER THAN A BREADBOX: Building on the success of Wandering Aesthetics’ reoccurring Electric Pressure Cooker Cabaret, Bigger Than a Breadbox (BTAB) draws inspiration from Akron’s historic ties to vaudeville. Using this vaudevillian blueprint, BTAB will be a dynamic quarterly event that celebrates artistic excellence and unites audiences through affordable access to a revolving lineup of high quality performers. BTAB will tour Akron; each “bill” will be comprised of acts selected from the EPCooker and the neighborhoods where BTAB events are held. Girls and women can be empowered, and have the self-esteem and confidence to successfully face all the challenges and change the American concept that "killing humans" is the answer. Join us in a life-changing conversation to challenge, explore & even begin, to replace your traditional religious, political, philosophical (ageism, sexism, and classism) notions.. Notions that tend to "keep females in their place." Notions that keep females from 'fighting' against bringing up, and interacting with, males who seem to be ingrained with traditional attitudes and behaviors that make them feel 'all powerful', insensitive and above the laws of God and the good parts of society. I’ve watched several church services, with congregations in the hundreds, maybe thousands. I’m having trouble understanding how these folks suck up the historical misinformation, especially about the world being founded as a paternalistic society being passed along, and still in existence all these several thousand years. So, I’d like to begin to help girls and women. Maybe it’s not too late for us to help change the world, change history. Look at what’s being addressed in churches, politics & society in general. Stuff that’s being, has been, perpetuated since the beginning of time. Stuff that has had negative impact on women being equal to men, equal as first class people, being empowered to be the best they can be, to their fullest extent. What: A session to begin strategizing, planning how we can come together to help empower girls and women for now and the future.
