SEAT OF THE PANTS Announces Summer 2017 Season: ACTS OF DISSENT

During the recent presidential campaign, on Election Night, and in the months following, one thing has become abundantly clear: there's quite a bit of discord and dissension in our country. Rallies that turn strident. Debates that feel more like boxing matches. News programs that feel increasingly polarized. On both sides, folks protest feeling marginalized, unheard, fearful for their futures, and more. And it's everyone: conservatives and liberals, Blacks and Whites, rural residents and city dwellers, blue collar workers and white collar professionals, men and women. Lots of talking at or above each other doesn't seem to make any headway, and our leaders often model gridlock rather than compromise. What can be done? The theatre has a long tradition of being the place where battling political ideologies, conflicting philosphical worldviews, and varying theologies can be translated into captivating stories and performances. With just a bit of distance, audience members can watch conflicts they may have a stake in a bit more dispassionately and with a critical, rational eye. Sometimes, these conflicts are lightened and made comedic; at other times, allegory or metaphor soften the rancor; in the best case scenario, watching a character onstage allows audience members to identify with and begin to empathize with someone who looks and thinks much differently than they do. To that end, Seat of the Pants Productions is proud to present an entire season of plays that do just this: dramatize and "storify" some of the conflicts that exist in America today in an effort to move hearts and open minds, thereby creating an avenue for increased understanding and potential dialogue. The plays are: THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON (a staged reading), by Jason Miller: Pulitzer Prize winning play about 5 former basketball heroes gathered together to reminisce about their glory days, bemoan their diminishing status in the world as white men, and confront some ugly racism from their shared past. - Runs May 19-21 at the Founders Hall Theatre at Malone University, starring Bob McCoy, Aaron Brown, Michael Laymon, Stuart Hoffman, and Andrew Knode CHESAPEAKE (a one man show), by Lee Blessing: A performance artist retaliates against a conservative senator who revoked his NEA funding by kidnapping the senator's dog. But when the artist and the dog die during the attempt, the unthinkable happens - and the two men have to learn how to get along. - Runs June 9-18 at the Black Box Theater at GlenOak High School, starring Craig Joseph A BRIGHT ROOM CALLED DAY (full production), by Tony Kushner: a story of artists banding together during the Weimar Republic to resist the Nazis rise to power - poses some terrific questions about what art can (and cannot) achieve in contemporary society. - Runs July 14-23 at the Black Box Theater at GlenOak High School, starring Olivia Wimberly, Justin Edenhofer, Rachel Kall, Natalie Welch, Richard Worswick, Moriah Roberts, Andy Simmons, Barbara Howitt, and more THE CHRISTIANS (full production), by Lucas Hnath: When a pastor announces to his congregation that he no longer believes in Hell and asks them to take a more loving and open approach to the world around them, it shakes the foundations that the church is built upon and creates many avenues for discussion and dialogue. - Runs August 18-27 at a location to be determined, starring Scott Stachiw, Meg Hopp, Tom Stephan, Julie Connair, and more Performances are always Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM. Nikki St Clair was a sweet fun-loving actress until she became mentally locked into a villainess role. The character will debut later this month in the pages of Apama The Undiscovered Animal (the ongoing saga of Cleveland’ resident superhero), and Tap Dance Killer will have her own series debuting later this year. The Tempest A play by William Shakespeare The setting is an “un-inhabited island” somewhere in the sea between the north coast of Africa and the Mediterranean coast of Italy. Queen Alonza, of Naples is returning from Africa where she has overseen the marriage of her sister, to the prince of Tunis. As the Queen’s ship enters the magical range of the enchanted island, Prospero, banished duke and bookish sorcerer, seizes the opportunity. He designs a series of events that will punish his enemies while restoring himself and his fifteen-year-old daughter, Miranda, to power in Italy. Prospero’s airy spirit, Ariell, petitions the Orishas of waters and tempests to create a devastating sea storm. The tempest shipwrecks the queen’s party and disperses the travelers about the island, causing each to despair that the others have perished. Amidst this unfolding drama, the young Miranda, Caliban, and Ferdinand each follow a voyage of passage of their own as they encounter the harbingers of a brave new world. Full of magic, mystery, pageantry and conflict, the first recorded performance of The Tempest was on November 1st in 1611. The play is both a comedy and a tragedy. It has been performed all over the world for more than 400 years continuing to inspire and delight. This production features original music and dance as well as an art installation of student-created artworks designed to bring the characters and imagined flora and fauna of the island to life. *Directed by Miriam Bennett. Choreography by Jessica Spurlock. Presented with live musical accompaniment. Volunteer At Station Hope! We need your support as we create this incredible and unique event for the fourth year! What is Station Hope? Station Hope is a collection of short works of theatre, dance, choir performances and visual art installations, all inspired by current social justice issues and being performed throughout Cleveland's first authenticated Underground Railroad site, St. John's Episcopal Church in Ohio City. The event aims to bring together neighborhoods and individuals to engage and reflect on social justice, equity, and a shared vision of hope. The event is on Saturday, April 29th from 6:30-10:00pm Volunteer Tasks - What do we need you to do? First and foremost: be active and engaged in the event itself, while also helping attendees to navigate the evening. More specifically, volunteer duties will break down as follows: * Check out the Event! Don't worry - you'll have plenty of time to experience the event yourself. There are two different volunteer shifts from 5-8pm and from 7:30-10:30pm. * Ushers - Help monitor traffic flow and answer questions, direct attendees to particular venues along with our CPT House Management Staff. * Parking/Outdoor Support - Direct attendees to parking areas and event, monitor outdoor spaces along with our CPT facilities staff. * Greenrooms - Monitor traffic flow, and help with assigned tasks in these areas, along with our CPT Staff. HELLCAB is a seventy-minute collection of scenes from a day in the life of a Chicago cabbie. Beginning with a 6:30 a.m. trip by a born-again couple…the cabbie's long day's journey proceeds with fares from, among many others, a dangerous trio of druggies, a piggish mini-capitalist, a benumbed rape victim, an argumentative pair of fellow cabbies, a drunken woman on welfare, a smug lawyer, a randy couple on the way to a motel, and two boisterous New Yorkers out on the town. Alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant, these sharply etched blackouts and cameos…are capped by a stunning and very touching final scene.
