Dobama’s ‘Hand to God’ is demonically funny Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics Hand puppets can get away with saying just about anything. As innocent extensions of their handlers, Burr Tillstrom’s Kukla, Fran and Ollie, Sherri Lewis’ Lamb Chop and Jim Henson’s Muppets charmed and educated golden age TV audiences with their cheery dispositions, disarming naiveté and clandestine moral guidance. More recent wood and fabric fabrications such as Jeff Dunham’s abusive Walter, Robert Smigel’s Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and the ensemble in Broadway’s bawdy “Avenue Q” give voice to their creators’ progressive social commentary and particular political leanings. Get Hep Swing's annual swing prom is this Saturday, April 29th.

Sat 4/29 @ 8 PM-midnight It’s not unusual for Get Hep Swing, the local group behind swing revival and Lindy hop dancing, to have open soirees, at least once a month, at the Slovenian Workmen’s Home on Waterloo Road, on Cleveland’s east side. But this time of year the April edition is super-expanded, in honor of high school prom season. Visitors are welcome at Swing Prom to come in whatever prom getup they fancy — vintage-retro to campy to, who knows, maybe even Sissy Spacek in Carrie. Get Hep Swing founder Valerie Salstrom will teach an intro to jitterbug lesson for the first hour, then things get lively, with live band Red Light Roxy, and recognition of a prom king and queen. Good Afternoon!! Playmakers Youth Theatre in Beachwood is looking for a new Musical Director for the following two shows: - Willy Wonka (auditions early September, performances in December)- Guys and Dolls (auditions early January, performances in March) Ideal candidate should have experience working with and teaching kids music (these two shows are for students in 2-9 grades). Other important skills: organization, patience, and flexibility. We have a fairly short rehearsal process and try to work with your existing schedule and projects. Rehearsals are generally Sunday afternoons, Monday evenings. and Wednesday evenings. You will not be required to attend all rehearsals (i.e. blocking/early choreography). There is a stipend provided.
