Auditions! Two Weeklong PLAYground Staged Reading Workshops at TCT

PLAYground is an exciting program, now in its second year, that showcases new works for children by Cleveland-area writers during this two-week intensive workshop in July of 2017. Writers (using local directors, and actors age 16 and up) will be given one week's rehearsal to showcase their works in true workshop fashion, book in hand, and one weekend to perform that workshop for the public, complete with audience talk-backs following performance. During the week, they are given full use of the TCT rehearsal space, stage, and access to puppets, props, and costumes. PLAYground gives Cleveland-area writers a chance to put their work up on its feet, to help provide development of ideas, and exposure to the public. Plays submitted to PLAYground may be considered for future, full-stage production by TCT. Free Parking at the 8th annual Cleveland Asian Festival

Easy to get to and attend Cleveland Asian Festival For Immediate Release May 16, 2017 Cleveland, OH - Almost 50,000 people attended the Cleveland Asian Festival last year. The 8th annual Cleveland Asian Festival this weekend (May 20 and 21 11AM - 7PM) promises to be just as popular. Yet many people have not visited this free family event because they are unfamiliar with the location, parking and other logistics. The Cleveland Asian Festival (CAF) is held on Payne Ave. between East 27th and East 30th streets. If you know where Asia Plaza is you know where CAF is. You can get to the Festival via normal routes to downtown/midtown such as Chester, Carnegie, Euclid and Superior from the East. There are freeway exits from I90, 71 and 77 at Chester and Superior that will take you to East 30th. Payne is between Superior and Chester. FREE parking is available at East 24th and Payne Avenue in CSU Parking Lots #50, #54, and #57 and Magnet Lot #56. There is no parking on East 30th or East 27th street. This free parking is within walking distance (.2 miles) of the festival and Free Shuttle bus service rides provided by Ace Taxi occur every 10-15 minutes. You will also see some "for fee" driveways and parking lots offering parking for money. These are not affiliated with the Cleveland Asian Festival and should be used at your own risk. These are just a few of the characters you'll meet in the farcical comedy "Drop Dead!" which opens a four-weekend run on the Main Stage at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, 8 p.m. on June 2. Written by popular playwrights Billy van Zandt and Jane Milmore, "Drop Dead!" is a physical comedy set around a play-within-a-play; a potboiler murder mystery with an oddball cast of has-been actors seeking to revive their flagging careers. The budget for their Off-Off-Off-Off Broadway production is so tight that the only piece of furniture on stage is a couch, while the rest is painted on the walls. According to director Barbara L. Rhoades, "Drop Dead!" begins at the dress rehearsal for this ill-fated production, in which the set falls apart, props break, and the producer and an actor are murdered. On the opening night, the murders continue. But the show must go on, and the remaining actors strive to save the show, save their careers, solve the mystery, and stay alive for curtain calls! "The audience can play along, guessing who the murderer is with a $1 entry into a 50/50 raffle," explains Rhoades. "All they have to do is select the character that they think is the murderer and turn in a ballot at intermission. At the end of the show, a winner will be selected from among the correct ballots." Included in the cast are John Peters, Adam Young, Jenny Barrett, Eric Oswald, Marcy Staninger, Michael Rogan, Matthew Mayer, Dottie Emerick and Chris Herak. The show is presented 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through June 24 with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee on June 11. It is intended for mature audiences due to sexual innuendo and mild adult language. “Teen Angels,” my truth-based, edgy drama is available for production, and I am seeking a filmmaker with a vision akin to my own with whom to collaborate. – (age 25-35 with hip hop acumen and ease with Ebonics and *Spanglish* is a plus.) With a mixed gender and culturally diverse cast of nine, a single set, just one scene and a running time of 90 minutes, “Teen Angels” features a barrage of in-your-face dialogue and pure provocation. Moviegoers, particularly ages 16 – 26, are in store for lots of bang for their buck with this one; it brazenly holds nothing sacred: family values, the law of the land nor, especially, authority figures of all stripes. The story takes place in a day room at Los Angeles County Juvenile Hall now and focuses on a very unique group therapy session, for which the closest comparison is a no-rules-ultimate-fighting-cage-match, led by social worker and aspiring millennial movie-cowboy, Mel Feinberg, 26, self-described as “a wise ass on a short leash.” The posse consists of seven inmates, all of them age 17, awaiting sentencing and quivering in a melodramatic display of mock fear of Dr. Crabtree, Afr. Am., the facility’s director, staunch advocate of force feeding her charges the gospel by any means necessary. As a side bar, we are drawn into the kids’ compelling histories of victimization and mind-blowing mayhem through a succession of brutally honest monologues. Their pain has a long shelf life, and it demands to be felt. We cheer them on, as they fight the power with fearless Mel by their side and only the strong left standing. My other work includes the memoir, *Hollywood Raw*, and “On the Wall,” an urban drama, presented by L.A.’s Barnsdal Gallery Theatre. In addition, “Hotel California,” my psychological thriller; “Hollywood Cowboy,” my comedy; and “Cue the Sunset,” my Bronx tale - (all read at Cleveland’s Ensemble Theatre) – put my stamp on a multitude of theater patrons’ must-see lists. Lose Your Marbles, a new dance-centric fringe festival, is coming to downtown Akron June 9-10

Presented by Neos Dance Theatre with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knight Arts Challenge, the fringe festival takes its name from Akron’s legacy as the birthplace of toy marble-making automation. “With Akron’s reputation for dance, and audiences hungry for it, the city is a perfect platform for a festival that showcases new and emerging artists,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation. “Lose Your Marbles” will begin June 9 with a kick-off event at the newly repurposed Trailhead Event Space at Cascade Lofts on the banks of the Ohio and Erie Canal. On June 10 it will move to Akron's historic Trolley Barn, gifted by the Development Finance Authority of Summit County, with a temporary large stage, lighting and theatrical equipment. Smaller spaces without stages — including an ice cream parlor, coffee shop, gallery, and storefront window space provided in collaboration with the Curated Storefront — will feature pop-up performances to round out the festival’s walk-able footprint. The pop-up performances will be free, while the main stage performances on Friday and Saturday will have small fees. Lucky Plush Productions of Chicago, Duane Gosa of Les Ballet Trockadero, and Terk Lewis Waters of Complexions Contemporary Ballet are slated to perform, representing nationally recognized groups. Local participants include Ma'Sue Productions, Inlet Dance Theatre, Groundworks Dance Theatre, and Neos Dance Theatre have confirmed participation as well. Additional dance and visual artists — emerging and established — will be chosen by a festivalpanel. Plans are also underway to present larger “Lose Your Marbles” festivals in 2018 and 2019. Bobby Wesner, co-founder and artistic director of Neos, says that “Lose Your Marbles” is taking its cues from other fringe festivals, such as the world’s largest and oldest in Edinburgh, Scotland, by giving artists the freedom to present diverse, original and often risky works. “Akron's fringe festival will be a fun and informative opportunity for our community to binge-watch the performing arts and then share their opinions about what they've seen.” Audience members will be able to vote for the best-of-show performance that will then receive a final showcase on the evening of June 10 and a cash award.
