*OPENS FRIDAY!!!!* Western Reserve playhouse is thrilled to be bringing to its stage “Terms of Endearment”, adapted for the stage by Dan Gordon and based on the Oscar-winning film by James L. Bret. This wonderful play runs August 17-September 1, 2018 (Fridays & Saturdays at 8PM; with a 2PM Matinee on Sunday August 26th). Challenges in life and love test the resilience of a mother-daughter relationship in the stage adaptation, based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry McMurtry and the 1983 film. Though Emma is often exasperated by her highly-opinionated mother, Aurora, they talk every day about their problems, from Aurora finding unexpected love even as she becomes a reluctant grandmother, to Emma’s struggle in her troubled marriage. When they need one another most, will they be able to find courage in each other? This funny and touching story captures the delicate, sometimes fractured bonds between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, and lovers, both old and new. Karen Rose directs this stage adaptation of the emotional movie, filled with tenderness and comedy. This show features the amazing acting works of Kerry Scanlon, Annette Fernandez, Craig Webb, Corey East, Lisa Rupple, and Austin Sasser. The Brecksville Theatre Offers a Comedic Change-up with Waiting for Godot August 11, 2018…Once upon a time—July 1, 2017, to be exact—two theaters, each with a long history of producing crowd-pleasing plays for the town of Brecksville, merged into one organization. The powers that be at the newly formed Brecksville Theatre decided to offer an expanded bill of fare to their audiences. Entertainment still has its place at the top of their goals, but the organization folds into their season a range of plays that might enrich their community with scripts that encourage the audience to think and feel in broader terms. Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett certainly does that. Directed by Art Suskin and produced by Michele Bender, this rendition of the play first performed in 1953 features not only Beckett’s fabulous words but large doses of comedy from beginning to end. Suskin says that “The story is simple, really. Two guys, Didi and Gogo, wait for a promised meeting with a mysterious and elusive Godot. Godot makes appointment after appointment, but never seems to appear to tell them whatever it is they feel they need to know before going on. The question for them is how to spend the time while…waiting for Godot.” Art Suskin comes to Brecksville with more than 50 years of experience staging hundreds of plays in Kansas City, New York, Miami, and now in Northeast Ohio. “Being a professional director hasn’t made me rich and famous, but it has made me happy. I suppose you’d say I have a purpose,” says Suskin. Tyler Barhorst (Didi), David C. Dolansky (Gogo), Bob Kenderes (Pozzo), Daniel McKinnon (Lucky), and Mitch Randjelovic (The Boy) comprise the cast for the play. Suskin’s direction has infused this production with wall-to-wall physical comedy. When asked what audiences have in store for them, Suskin says, “Laughter. Lots of it. Didi and Gogo are essentially vaudeville clowns in the tradition of the Marx Brothers and Chaplin and Jim Carey and Robin Williams. We have worked with Fight Director John Evenden to create some outrageous stuff—slapstick, falls, and general silliness that helps the guys pass the time until Godot shows up. Hopefully the audience will howl with laughter while Beckett’s more sober points hit home all the more forcefully.” Under Suskin’s direction, stage manager Emily Kovalcik, scenic designer Emily Dotson, light and sound designer Austin Hopson, property designer Evelyn Stevens, and costume designer Maddie Brown have come together to support and enhance Waiting for Godot with creations for the eye and ear. “I treat every production as though this is the first time it’s being performed,” Suskin says. “During the weeks of rehearsal, everyone has collaborated to make a play that will surprise and delight audiences who know the play, who don’t know the play, and who think they know the play. I am hoping for that shock of recognition in the audience that manifests as smiles, laughter, and barks of laughter. And maybe the odd thoughtful moment.” The Brecksville Theatre’s production of Waiting for Godot opens at The Brecksville Theatre, 49 Public Square, in Brecksville, Ohio on August 24. It will play through September 9 with performances at 7:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00pm on Sundays. ++++++++ Local Theatre Looking for Teachers for Fall Classes Academy for Dramatic Arts, Berea’s very own Youth Theatre is searching for educators for our two fall courses for artists 13-18 years of age: Fundamentals of Acting Saturday Mornings starting September 15 Take eight weeks to recognize and build the foundational skills it takes to be a relevant, truthful storyteller of the stage. Sharpen focus, explore meaning behind text and dabble with different techniques of delivery in this workshop. By the finish of the session you'll become a stronger performer and have a monologue you can take to an audition. Vocal Technique Workshop Saturday Mornings starting September 15 Explore different styles of music for musical theatre and techniques to perform them effectively. For eight weeks week work on site reading, using your voice to emote and tell a story and how to properly project your voice. By the finish of the session you will leave with a song that fits your voice and can be used for auditions. Times are flexible as long as they are on Saturday morning/afternoon. Classes run from September 15-November 3. Teachers will asked to submit goals and lesson plans for review. The Beachwood Arts Council (BAC) and Shaker Heights Arts Council (SHAC) are proud to announce Good Neighbors, a juried Spring 2019 exhibit, scheduled to run from June 5 – 27 2019, at the Beachwood Community Center. BAC and SHAC are looking for artists, 21 years or older, who work in any 2D medium. Artists must live in Beachwood or Shaker Heights, be in the Shaker Heights School district, or work in Beachwood or Shaker Heights. BAC and SHAC will collect the money and take a 40% commission on all artwork sold. Artists will be paid immediately upon receipt of funds. Neither BAC nor SHAC retain copyrights or usage beyond promoting the artists and their work. There are no entry fees. The Cleveland Pops Orchestra August 13, 2018 Update Cleveland, Ohio New Cleveland Pops Youth Orchestra extends audition schedule The renowned Cleveland Pops Orchestra, in collaboration with The Music Settlement, has established The Cleveland Pops Youth Orchestra to nurture and train young musicians to reach their full potential while promoting critical thinking, self-confidence, and leadership skills through music. The Youth Orchestra has been auditioning young musicians throughout the summer months at The Music Settlement and now wishes to see more applicants to fill their roster. Additional audition dates at The Music Settlement will include Monday, August 27th at 4:20 p.m. and Wednesday, September 12th at 4:00 p.m. Please call Nikki Claverie at 216 421-5806, ext.188, or email her at NClaverie(a)TheMusicSettlement.org<mailto:NClaverie@TheMusicSettlement.org> to schedule an audition. Positions for the new ensemble will be open to intermediate-to-advanced skill level string, woodwind and brass students ages 12 to 18. Starting October 1, 2018, Youth Orchestra members will rehearse each Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Music Settlement in University Circle. Under the baton of conductor Carl Topilow, Youth Orchestra members will explore the music of Broadway, Hollywood, jazz, light classics and popular songs. The ensemble's conductor Carl Topilow will visit individual schools to hear applicants for whom the audition dates, times, or location might be inconvenient. Topilow will be accepting applicants past the established audition schedule. Concerts and other exciting performance opportunities will be announced soon.
