When the Ugly Duckling is born, he doesn’t look like his sister or the other ducks. When he tries to quack, he doesn’t sound like his sister or any other creature in the woods. Not only does the Ugly Duckling look different, he sounds different too. That is because the Ugly Duckling is deaf. With the help of a local farm wife, he discovers that sound creates vibrations and he sets off to find his way in the world.

AUDITIONS - CINDER-ELLA - Beck Center Youth Theater Beck Center for the Arts Youth Theater, one of the oldest continuously running Youth Theaters in the country, will be holding auditions on September 16 & 17, 2018 for the first production of our 70th Anniversary Season: CINDER-ELLA Written and Directed by Russel Stich The Story: Poor Ella longs to be like the other girls of the village, spending carefree days laughing and playing with friends, but instead she's forced to spend her time tending to the needs of her seven vain stepsisters. Excitement sweeps across the countryside when The King announces that his son will be seeking a bride. With the help of her friends, a group of feisty mice, and a mysterious fairy godFATHER, Ella sets out to meet the Prince and change her future. Join us for this original re-imagining of the classic children's tale from the author and director of last season's hit Snow White's Adventures! Having upset his schedule, Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts to explain himself to his wives and two suspicious police officers, with help from his lazy layabout neighbour upstairs in Wimbledon.

Call for Artists: Utility Box Design Competition

The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is sponsoring an *art competition* for the design of a *utility box* located on the Vintage Development Group’s Townhomes of Shaker Heights property on Van Aken Boulevard at Sutton and Onaway Roads. Designs will be *displayed and judged* at *Painting the Town,* a gala event being held at the Shaker Country Club *on Friday evening, October 5, 2018*. Designs and applications must be submitted to SHAC via email ( info(a)shakerartscouncil.org) no later than *Wednesday 3 October at 5pm*. Applicants may submit more than one (1) design, but each must be submitted in a separate email. There are no entry fees. Artists will retain all copyrights to their artwork. The artist with the winning entry will receive a $500.00 stipend and have the work installed. The displayed works will be anonymous. *Do not sign your submittal nor indicate your name on the submitted design document.* The judges will be the attendees of the *Painting the Town *gala. Applicants do not need to attend the gala. The winner of the competition will be contacted by SHAC the following week. Ages 16+ join Cleveland Dance Project for a jazz master class with Tessa Cannon on Friday September 14 from 6-7:30pm at Dance Dance Dance in Parma. Tessa Cannon grew up as a gymnast and competition dancer in upstate New York, where she learned styles ranging from jazz and hip hop to ballet, tap, and modern. She continued dancing in college as a dance minor at Ohio Wesleyan University, where she performed and choreographed for both student- and faculty-directed productions. She has danced professionally as a Canton Charge Girl,Cleveland Gladiator Girl, and as a Cleveland Cavalier Girl for the 2016-2017 season. Despite having moved to Columbus as a vet tech working for the Columbus Zoo, she makes the commute weekly to rehearse for Cleveland Dance Project's third season showcase on December 8 at Cleveland Heights High School, as a choreographer and dancer.
