WHAT - Join us for a fun evening of swing music and swing dancing WHEN - 8 - 9 pm All-levels, beginner-friendly Jitterbug dance lesson with multi-year swing dance champion, Valerie Salstrom. You do not need a partner to attend the lesson or dance. We rotate partners. If you bring a partner and choose not to rotate that is okay too. 9 pm - 12 am Live music provided by one of the first swing bands in the region, Hepcat Revival. WHERE - The Lakewood Masonic Temple is located at 15300 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio. There is a large parking lot behind the building. Enter through the front doors. BAND - Hepcat Revival Hepcat Revival is a 7-piece swinging, jump blues band of roustabouts and ne'er-do wells. Playing toe-tapping, finger-poppin' music reminiscent of a time when cars were as big as Rhode Island, America traveled by rail, and you didn't know what politicians did behind closed doors. Decked out in the full regalia of the latest fashions, Hepcat Revival will dazzle you with music the likes of Louis Prima, Big Joe Turner, Cab Calloway, and Louis Jordan, as well as a few beauties of their own composition. https://www.facebook.com/HepcatRevival/ ATTIRE - Wear what makes you feel good and allows you to move and pivot easily. COST - Dances are $12 per person. $5 for first-timers to a Get Hep Swing monthly dance. Pay at the door. There are no pre-event ticket sales. WHO MAY ATTEND? - You do not need to bring a dance partner but you may be dancing with lots of different people during the lesson and while the band plays, if you like. If you want to only dance with the person you bring with you, that is fine too. You do not need previous dance experience. We do hope you bring a positive and open mind and attitude. PARKING - There is a free lot in the back. Plenty of street parking as well. Enter through the front double doors. If using an elevator would make your life easier, please park in the back and enter through the single door at the corner of the building. Once inside you will find that there is a small incline to the elevator. Please push the button for the ballroom. Please come and see the person at the front desk or send someone to pay for you. We welcome anyone to join us who has an interest in dance, music, socializing and fun. We don't care what your physical ability or size is, where you are in life, where you are on the spectrum of sexual or gender orientation, what color or creed, or non-creed, you are. Are you a man who wants to learn how to follow or a woman who wants to learn how to lead? That's cool! This idea is not new to the swing dance scene. We are the easiest club to join. If you have an interest, you are in. :) WHO WE ARE - We are the swing dance company Get Hep Swing. Get Hep Swing is lead by owner, founder, and multi-year national and international swing dance champion, Valerie Salstrom. We love spreading the gospel of swing dancing and we are excited to share the language and culture of this truly American, urban folk dance form with you. It is important for us to let you know that this dance style started in the African-American ballrooms of Harlem, New York in the late 1920s/early 1930s. PIERREPONT FINCH - Window cleaner. (Male - Age 20-35, tenor) Finch is young and driven to succeed in the business world. He exhibits a great amount of charm and pluck but is never completely trustworthy. He will vacillate between uncertainty and over-confidence. J.B. BIGGLEY - President of the Worldwide Wicket Company. (Male - Age 45-60, baritone) Biggley is a self-important blowhard. He is the head of the company and makes sure everyone knows it. However, he is completely brought to his knees by the women in his life. BUD FRUMP - Biggley's nephew. (Male - Age 20-40, tenor) Frump is a lazy weasel who expects to succeed in the company through nepotism. He appears to have everything put together, but the people who know him, know the truth. ROSEMARY PILKINGTON - Office Secretary (Female - Age 20-35, mezzo or alto) Rosemary is beautiful, loyal and long-suffering. She is in love with Finch and supports him in his climb to succeed in the company. She is spurned and ignored several times throughout the show and continues to return to Finch. HEDY LA RUE - The Other Woman (Female - Age 20-40, soprano or mezzo) Hedy is the sexy bombshell who is having an affair with Biggley. She is not bright but knows how to use her looks to succeed in the company. She later appears as the pirate mascot in the company "treasure hunt." SMITTY - Office Secretary (Female - Age 20-45, mezzo or alto) Smitty is friend and confidant of Rosemary. She is less idealistic than Rosemary and encourages her in her efforts to snag Finch. MISS JONES - Mr. Biggsley's secretary (Female - Age 20-60, high belt) Miss Jones is the extremely gruff executive secretary to the head of the company. She is the one that keeps Biggley in line, and all of the employees try to stay out of her way. She breaks this mold late in the show with an upbeat solo. This character must be a belter. BERT BRATT - Personnel Manager (Male - Age 20-60, baritone) Harried executive that does a quality job. Bratt is central to the hirings and firings that move the plot along and is one of the only executives who seems to do his job. MR TWIMBLE - Head of the Mail Room (Male - Age 30-60, baritone) Hardworking low-level executive who has been beaten down by working in the mail room for too many years. He is a genuinely likeable guy. WALLY WOMPER - Chairman of the Board (Male - Age 40-70, baritone) Womper is a grumpy looking man who is largely silent. When he does speak, he is revealed to be a gruff but charming man who is proud of his blue-collar background. MISS KRUMHOLTZ - Mr. Gatch's secretary (Female - Age 20-60, soprano, mezzo, or alto) Miss Krumholtz is the professional secretary that is completely loyal to the executive she is assigned to that day. MILT GATCH - Head of Plans and Systems (Male - Age 20-60, tenor, baritone, or bass) Gatch is a confident and handsome junior executive who is not immune to an attractive female. BENJAMIN BURTON DANIEL OVINGTON - New head of advertising (Male - Age 20-40, tenor, baritone, or bass) Ovington is the golden boy. Tall, handsome, athletic and smart. Staging For The Working Actor This workshop is designed for both stage actors and film actors. Be an actor that directors want to cast! Get on your feet and learn how to get the most out of staging rehearsals. Learn how to collaborate with a director to create organic, truthful, and compelling stage pictures that communicate character and action. Christine McBurney has extensive Acting, Teaching and Directing experience and offers lots of valuable information in her workshops. On Sunday July 28th, from 1p-5p, Christine will be teaching a special workshop called Staging For The Working Actor, at Houde School of Acting (2310 Superior Ave, Cleveland). In 2017, The Cleveland Critics' Circle honored Mamaí and her production of A DOLL’S HOUSE at Playhouse Square with two Superior Achievement Awards. As an educator, Christine was named a U.S. Presidential Scholars Program’s Distinguished Teacher and a Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She has received grants and fellowships to study Shakespeare in performance at The Globe Theatre in London, the National Endowment for the Humanities’ National Institute on Teaching Shakespeare, and The Juilliard School. Currently she is an adjunct faculty member at Baldwin Wallace University’s Department of Theatre & Dance. For 16 years prior, she taught theatre and film and served a stint as Chair of Shaker Heights High School’s nationally-recognized and award-winning theatre arts department. She holds a BA in Comparative Literature and Writing from Columbia University and an MFA in Acting from Kent State University.
