Beck Center for the Arts' Youth Theater Program Puts Their Best Beak Forward in the Musical Honk! JR. JR, <https://www.beckcenter.org/youth-shows/youthshows-honkjr> Available for convenient streaming May 20 to May 23, 2021, this adaptation of the beloved fable of The Ugly Duckling focuses on creativity and compassion. With music by George Stiles, and book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe, Honk! JR is based on the well-known story by Hans Christian Andersen, The Ugly Duckling, and the award-winning full length musical Honk. This charming family musical conveys an important message, about being unique, and different. Honk! JR. is adapted for a young cast, as a heartwarming celebration of being different. Through laughter, and a few tears, everyone can see themselves in this cast of cute to curmudgeonly characters. Direction and choreography by Sarah Clare, and music direction by Heidi Herczeg. Clare states, "Working with our students is a never ending master class in adaptability, resilience, and passion. We are thankful for our artists onstage and behind the scenes. Behind every adapted design, additional resource, mask, and bottle of hand sanitizer, is a dedicated team whose hard work helps keep our students safe, and creating the work they love." In this witty and hilarious, but also very touching show, the character of Ugly looks quite a bit different from their siblings, and it's starting to show. The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite their mother's protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about themselves, the little fowl finds themselves on an adventure of self-discovery, while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry Cat. Along the way, Ugly meets a whole flock of unique characters, and finds out that being different is not a bad thing to be, especially with these funny fellows. This touching musical is perfect for all ages. The production will be filmed in-person, with participants masked, and socially-distanced. Students of Beck Center, not limited to youth theater classes, were invited to audition for this piece. The cast consists of 48 students ages 7-18. Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is hiring a Technical Director and Lead Teacher for our nationally recognized Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP). This is a seasonal full-time position. Position begins July 5, 2021 and no later than August 15, 2021. Salary range is $650-720/week based on experience and range of skills. Job Description CPT is hiring a Technical Director and Lead Teacher for the STEP program (STEP TD). This role reports to the Education Director. The STEP TD leads and supervises a group of teenagers in implementing the set and sound needs for an outdoor touring show, including a basic sound system and a 16' x 20' stage. The STEP TD gives 6 hours of daily instruction in technical theatre skills and supervises teens while building scenic elements. The position requires extended hours, in the past as many as 50-60 hours a week. CPT summer programming will include up-to-date safety precautions for artists, staff, and patrons. Program Description CPT's Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP) is an arts-based job training program that engages Cleveland teens in a powerful, 8-week intensive (4 weeks for tech-theatre students) that focuses on excellence in performance, play creation, physical theatre, writing, production, and set design/construction. Students ages 14-19, with little or no previous performance experience, are eligible for participation and earn money while learning and practicing valuable job skills such as timeliness, communication, commitment, and teamwork. Under the guidance of CPT artists, teens develop an original play and then tour it to public parks throughout the city of Cleveland. Since its beginning in 1995, STEP has received multiple awards and recognitions, including those from the City of Cleveland, The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts. STEP is the longest-running arts-based, job-training program in Cleveland and has been utilized as an international model for engaging youth. STEP ensembles, comprised primarily of Black artists, see themselves as a positive and inspirational force and are able to witness their work's invaluable impact on the larger Cleveland community. Youth are onsite approximately 6 hours a day during creation and more while on tour. Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is hiring a Production Associate, a seasonal full-time position. Position begins between June 15 and June 30 and ends on September 25, 2021. Salary range is $600-700/week based on experience and range of skills. Production Associate Job Description CPT is hiring a Production Associate (PA). This role reports to the Associate Artistic Director/Director of Production. The PA oversees CPT's limited summer season, which includes performances on an outdoor stage onsite at CPT, four shows touring to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, and Arts in August in Lincoln Park. The PA coordinates with all artists for the summer season and may undertake some stage management and basic sound set up duties. The PA will be a key team member in producing Pandemonium, CPT's renowned party-of the-year. This work will range from artist communication, basic production work, décor and crafting, and a range of other tasks. Candidates must have stage management and production experience. The successful candidate will be collaborative, eager to learn new ways of working, service oriented, and highly self-motivated. This position requires evening and weekend availability and an average of 50 hours per week. A valid driver's license is required, and regular access to a vehicle is strongly preferred. CPT programming includes up-to-date safety precautions for artists, staff, and patrons.
