Arlene’s Broadway on Buffalo has had a tradition since opening of providing a venue for new script writers to see their creations come to life on stage. We’ve showcased dozens of newly-created scripts written by newbies to seasoned vets; usually presenting them in a late summer/early fall collection of one-act plays. This time, as the annual call goes out for submissions, we’d like to try something a little different. To keep up the tradition of debut works, but add some polish to the production for the audience, we’re providing the basic set in which the play takes place and letting the authors’ creativity take it from there. The rules are: The play must take place within the framework of the set…the rest is up to you. Here is the setting: ……The lights come up on a room with a low, cheap sofa, illuminated by a single bulb hung center. An unopened suitcase sits on one side of the sofa. End table on the other side with a picture turned face down.Slightly opened door upstage left and window upstage right with blinking light showing through and a mannikin posed in front of it. There is a closed door stage right. A broken mirror is on the wall stage left near door. Aaaannnnndddd…go!…. We don’t care if it’s a mystery, comedy, drama or even musical. We want it to be original, new and based in the set. Submissions should be 8-20 minutes long. We anticipate grouping 6-8 of these together into an August or September production. There is no pay for the successful entrants, though each author will receive a DVD of the production, tickets to the show and full credit throughout the production and performance process. Heck, we’ll even throw in free popcorn! Scripts should be formatted in approximate script form and will be submitted electronically. Please message with any questions.

Auditions for Spotlights’ Summer Youth Production: “Batboy: The Musical” Based on a story in The Weekly World News, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. Auditions will be held by appointment on Saturday, April 9 & Sunday, April 10 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Auditioners should sign up for an audition slot at www.broadview-heights-spotlights.org. Invited callbacks, if necessary, will be held on Thursday, April 14. Rehearsals will begin at the end of April. The show runs June 16 – 26. The show will be directed by Tim Anderson and music directed by Ryan Bergeron. Performers (ages 12 to 20) are invited to audition. The show contains mature themes and innuendo, and those auditioning and their parents should be familiar with the material before auditioning. Those auditioning should: - Plan to attend only one night of auditions. - Be familiar with the show and its music, language, and themes. - Prepare two one-minute, contrasting songs (one up-tempo, one ballad), at least one of these should be a rock song in the style of the show. - Bring sheet music in the correct keys, hole-punched in a three-ring binder. Singers will not be permitted to sing a cappella. - Bring a list of conflicts between April 24 and June 26 (including all school concerts, lessons, practices, games, family obligations, etc.). He continues to train and learn other forms of dance styles because he believes dancers are limitless to what they can learn and do. When 17 ,Evolution competed in Ohio's Best Dance Crew taking second place overall. Evolution was together through 2016, then Orlando founded Limitless in 2017. Orlando was part of the 2014 and 2015 downtown Cleveland New Year’s event. He has performed for Spanish artists Cosculluela, Plan B, and Yomo, as well as Montel Jordan, Flo Rida, Biz Markie, MGK and Lil Jon, and local artists local artists such as K. Davis, Bori Q, J Jigs, Jonathan El Romantico and many more. Orlando x-factor continues performing throughout Ohio. Orlando has had the privilege to travel to Atlanta, Florida, and Chicago to teach master classes and perform at multiple events and studios. He has taken classes with Alex Fetbroth, Laura Edwards, Tony Tzar, Lee Daniel, Tony Bellissimo and Parris Goelbel who all have danced and choreographed for celebrity artists such as Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber and many more. Since 2011 Orlando has worked as a professional dancer/entertainer teaching at multiple studios winning awards and national competitions. and local recreation centers in greater Cleveland. Ann combed through over 700 submissions from all over the world to come up with 11 pieces to produce. Submissions came from 41 of the 50 states as well as 16 different countries! These one-acts were originally scheduled to be performed in March of 2020 but were rudely interrupted by the COVID pandemic.
