Beck Center for the Arts Announces Acclaimed Play, Doubt: A Parable, With Powerful Performances In A Compelling Story Beck Center for the Arts<http://www.beckcenter.org/> will produce the Pulitzer Prize-winning, captivating, Doubt: A Parable, May 26 to June 25, 2023 in the intimate Studio Theater. Written by John Patrick Shanley<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Patrick_Shanley>, Doubt: A Parable<https://www.beckcenter.org/shows/doubt> is a gripping story of suspicion and morality set in a Catholic school in the 1960s. When a popular priest is accused of misconduct, a determined nun becomes convinced of his guilt, despite having no evidence to support her claim. Doubt: A Parable has been performed in theaters around the world and was adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 2008 with standout performances by Meryl Streep and Viola Davis. The play has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2005, and has been called a modern classic. The play explores themes of power, authority, and the dangers of certainty in the face of ambiguity. The central question about truth and certainty is something we all experience. And while the play was written as a reaction or response to a specific place and time in the world- in that case, the Iraq War--it remains a potent play because of the personal dynamics at play. Truth, faith, certainty, doubt. We struggle to align these things. I hope our audience will experience that doubt as the play unfolds. Where does truth live?" "The grey gulf between Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn's entrenched positions is where the audience are left to swim. The play leaves us, unnervingly, in that place of doubt." Both a love story and a wartime chronicle, this powerful play reveals the effects of the Vietnam War on a group of friends living in a small town in Northeast Ohio. The play opens in September of 1970, four months after the shootings at nearby Kent State of May 4, 1970, and months before the Vietnam War draft lottery of 1971. The script is based on Lax's novel, *The Year That Trembled*. The young men must examine their views of war andconsider the fate that awaits them; the young women and other townspeople face the possibility of losing their husbands, boyfriends and friends. Each member of the group embarks on a personal search that will bring very real and very adult conflict and pain and strip away their youthful naivete. As the play hurtles toward life-changing consequences, the enormity of this war contrasted with the microcosm of one small town exposes the desires, the betrayals, the loves & the ability to forgive, of characters who are at war within themselves. Broadview Heights Spotlights Theater Presents Our Town The Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Our Town, opens Friday, May 26th and runs Fridays and Saturdays through June 10, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. There will be a Sunday Matinee on June 4th at 3:00 P.M. Described by Edward Albee as "the greatest American play ever written," Our Town presents the small town of Grover’s Corners in three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage" and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, the play depicts the simple daily lives of the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre – die. Thornton Wilder's final word on how he wanted his play performed is an invaluable addition to the American stage and to the libraries of theatre lovers internationally. Convergence-continuum announces auditions for Exit, Pursued by a Bear by Lauren Gunderson PLAY DESCRIPTION: Exit, Pursued by a Bear by Lauren Gunderson Nan has decided to teach her abusive husband Kyle a lesson. With the help of her friend Simon (acting as her emotional -- and actual -- cheerleader) and a stripper named Sweetheart, she tapes Kyle to a chair and forces him to watch as they reenacts scenes from their painful past. In the piece de resistance, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Through this night of emotional trials and ridiculous theatrics, Nan and Kyle are both freed from their past in this smart, dark revenge comedy. AVAILABLE ROLES: "Kyle Carter, 28, male, a big messy boy, like a dumb dirty dog. He wears jeans, t-shirt, camo-jacket? Simon Beaufort, 27, male, pretty and strong and bitchy, like a slim cat... The Cleveland Dance Fest application deadline has been extended! Apply by June 11th at 11pm! This 3-day dance festival will take place at the historic LaSalle Theatre in Cleveland, featuring master classes and performances by dance artists from across Ohio & beyond. This year we are holding 4 concerts at the festival, as well as accepting requests for teaching artists for professional and youth classes (paid opportunity!) - Show 1 & Show 2 are for professional dancers, companies, and graduate students. - The Emerging Works Concert is for artists submitting “emerging works.” We are defining “emerging works” as any piece that is still open to change and development and is for artists at any stage of their career. This is also the concert for undergraduate artists. - The Commissioned Artist Application is for artists at all stages of their career who reside in Northeast Ohio. Commissioned artists will be paired with a TMP Choreographic Mentor and will receive 10 free rehearsal hours at TMP’s newly renovated studio. Commissioned artists' work will be presented in both the Emerging Works Concert & Shows 1 & 2. - The Youth Showcase for dance ensembles, ages 12-18 years old. - Dance on Film is for any artist over 18 from any state or country. Cleveland Dance Fest is a unique experience for all artists involved. TMP works to develop a partnership with each artist/group. When Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" reached British shores, it had a profound effect on Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker. Both found themselves in America on separate occasions, and the young writers, each who had previously corresponded with Whitman, were favored with an audience. Many subjects were discussed between them; their literary contemporaries, art, aesthetics, self-promotion, masculinity, and the celebration of the senses in word and in practice. Using material from contemporary records, personal letters and newspaper articles, WordStage recreates the substance of these marvelous meetings between three men of letters at different stages in their lives and careers. Featured performers are Brian Westerley as Oscar Wilde - Stuart Hoffman as Bram Stoker and Tim Tavcar as Walt Whitman.
