| The Academy for Dramatic Arts is please to announce auditions for their first production of the 2023-2024 Season, Willy Wonka, Jr on Sunday August 27th from 3-5. Callbacks to immediately follow from 5-6:30pm so please plan to stay unless you are released after auditions. Come be a part of our world of pure imagination! Auditions for our fall youth show, Willy Wonka Jr. are a little different from “normal” auditions. Our two hour audition slots include time to get to know one another, acting games, signing and dancing. All you have to do is come ready to move and have fun! Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka JR. follows enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory — or suffer the consequences. Performing November 17-19 Production Fee: This show does have a $100 production fee which is due at our first rehearsal (Thursday, August 31 6:30-8:30). Scholarships are available upon request. I miss playing in pits! I have considerable experience with playing in pits ranging from musical theater to the Pittsburgh Opera. I am busy, but interested is picking up extra work where I can. I am available for anything that requires a bass and has written out parts, and I can cover upright and/or electric bass roles. I play regularly in two regional orchestras, so following a conductor and meshing with other players is pretty much the job description, but I miss firing up the electric as well. I am also available to drop in as a sub. I have done that many times and can read 2.5 clefs fluently. I am based in the Akron area and distance willing to be traveled is dependent on schedules and the financial situation. My soul needs more music.

All auditioners are asked to come prepared with one minute of a song of their choosing. Auditoners will also be asked to cold read from the script. (Music auditions are to be a capella or with accompaniment tracks if you have them accessible). Auditioners are asked to wear comfortable clothes as we will learn a short dance movement. Performances: July 15th-30th (Fridays and Saturdays at 8:15pm and Sundays at 2:15pm) ROLES AVAILABLE: Rafiki - A wise mandrill who acts as healer of the Pridelands and guides Simba on his journey home. She is an omniscient character, evincing an air of mystery. Mufasa - The strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands. Sarabi - A featured lioness, Mufasa's mate, and Simba's mother. Zazu - The anxious yet loyal assistant to Mufasa who is always busy trying to do his duty. Scar - The antagonist of the show, overcome with jealousy of his brother, Mufasa, and nephew, Simba. Coldhearted and wickedly intelligent, he will stop at nothing to become king of the Pridelands. Young Simba - The protagonist of the story, is an adventurous and endearing cub who can't wait to be king of the Pridelands. Simba is playful, energetic, and naive, but after his father Mufasa's death, Simba struggles with shame and his destiny. Simba - Grows from a cub to lion in "Hakuna Matata." Older Simba has more complex moments as he reunites with Nala, mourns his father, and returns to confront Scar Young Nala - A courageous lion and Young Simba's best friend. She is not afraid to speak her mind. Nala - Grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar Sarafina - A featured lioness and Nala's mother. Shenzi - One of Scar's hyenas who plot to take over the Pridelands. She is the sassy one of the trio and is always looking out for herself. Banzai - A slick yet childish hyena who works for Scar. He would be the leader of the group if hyenas weren't so lazy. Ed - The third member of Scar's trio of lackeys. He has a loud, cackling laugh that is his only form of communication. 2023 FESTIVAL THEME "Social Awareness" Notre Dame College Performing Arts will host a 2023 Fall New Plays Festival. This festival will lift the voices of authors and writers who are members of the BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and underrepresented communities. This call is open to Notre Dame College Faculty, Staff and Students, as well as residents of Cuyahoga County and Northeast Ohio! If you are a Northeast Ohio Based playwright and/or performing artist and would like to submit a piece (either you have already written or would like to write) we are looking for you!! We are excited to be a part of providing a platform to bring new works to Northeast Ohio audiences! If you would like to submit a piece, here are some parameters and important information: -Selected piece should echo/focus on the festival theme of Social Awareness. -Selected pieces should be ideally between 30 and 90min in length. -5 Semi Finalist pieces will be selected and presented as "staged readings" and/or presentations. (Think chairs and music stands only, a general wash and some sound effects if needed). -These 5 selected works will be presented Friday September 29th and Saturday 30th in the Regina Auditorium on the campus of Notre Dame College. The 5 semifinalist authors will receive an honorarium (stipend). -Voting will be open to audiences to participate in helping to select ONE to TWO finalists from the semi Finalist works presented on the 29th and 30th. -Finalists will receive an honorarium and their work will be presented as the Fall NDC Theatre Ensemble Workshop Production performing November 17th, 18th, & 19th, 2023. AUDITIONS for Chess the Musical directed by Jordan Cooper Monday, September 18 - 6:30-10:00 Tuesday, September 19 - 6:30-10:00 call backs Wednesday Sept 20 Synopsis: The collaborators on Chess are giants of rock music and rock musicals, and here they have created a complex rock opera that played to full Broadway houses and standing ovations. In this musical, the ancient game becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super-power politics, and international intrigue. The pawns in this drama form a love triangle: the loutish American chess star, the earnest Russian champion, and a Hungarian American female assistant who arrives at the international chess match in Bangkok with the American, but falls for the Russian. From Bangkok to Budapest, the players, lovers, politicians and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.” CHESS CHARACTER BREAKDOWN & AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Audition Requirements - Please prepare one (1) 32 bar cut of a song in the style of the show. Call back offers will be extended the same evening as the audition due to the short turn around between auditions and call backs. Call backs will consist of a dance call, vocal call and acting call. All actors called back will be required to dance first. Principal Roles - All principal roles require strong vocal skills. All roles are open. All genders will be considered for all roles but gender lines for characters are noted below per the rights company. Video submissions are acceptable in lieu of traditional auditions but call backs must be attended. FLORENCE VASSY - Female Presenting - Mezzo, High Belt to E5 - 25-45 - Chess expert working as Freddie’s Second She is in search of her Father who went missing during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. FREDDIE TRUMPER - Male Presenting - Tenor, High Belt to C5 - 25–45 - American, International Chess Superstar with Celebrity status and an attitude to match. His temper at times outweighs his incredible gift for chess. ANATOLY SERGIEVSKY - Male Presenting - Bari-tenor - Belt to Bb4 - 25-45 - Russian, International Chess Champion. A serious and complicated person, filled with angst. A Russian Accent is preferred IVAN MOLOKOV - Male Presenting - Bass with strong range, down to F#2 - 30-50 - Russian. Anatoly’s Handler and member of Russian Intelligence with multiple irons in the political fire. SVETLANA SERGIEVSKY - Female Presenting - Mezzo - 25-45 - Russian. Anatoly’s supportive and elegant wife. She is steadfast and faithful in her beliefs. WALTER DE COURSEY - Male Presenting - Bass down to G#2 - American. Freddie’s Agent and handler. He has more political aspirations than it first appears. THE ARBITER - Male Presenting - Baritone - An enigma in the form of the World Chess Championship’s Arbiter. A referee of sorts representing the spirit of the game and more then they seem. YOUNG FLORENCE - Female Presenting - Soprano - A young version of Florence first seen in Hungary in 1956 and then throughout the play as a vision. ENSEMBLE: This musical requires a vibrant ensemble of incredibly versatile performers; not only physically but vocally. Ideally we are looking for eight (8) to ten (10) total ensemble members to play a myriad of roles. ALL ensemble members will have multiple characters, solos, features and constant business. PIT ENSEMBLE: This production may employ the use of up to eight (8) Pit Singers of mixed voice type. This would be a role that would not be granted visible stage time. Alas, Little Red’s couch potato parents don’t want to lose their little girl. How else will they get their cookies delivered to Grandmother? So they hire the evil queen to thwart the Fairy Godmother’s contest. Luckily, Little Red Riding Hood’s two sisters, Big Green Riding Hood and Medium Purple Riding Hood, help balance out the situation.
