Solon Center for the Arts is accepting applications for a part-time Instructor to fill the position of Musical Director for upcoming musical theater productions. Instructors lead and act as a role model to a group of participants in a specific area of the performing/fine arts. Instructors develop, implement and engage participants in classes, lessons, workshops, performances, pop-up events, etc. in their specific field/specialty. Primary tasks and responsibilities for this position include: • Attend auditions and collaborate on casting with the show director and choreographer. • Attend creative team meetings with Director and Choreographer to develop the overall vision of the show. • Plan, prepare and attend rehearsals. Adhere to a teaching schedule set by the director or Theater Coordinator. • Lead vocal warm ups and exercises, as well as teach music to the cast. • Accompany cast on piano during first half of rehearsals, as sound tracks will be used for the second half of rehearsals and for performances (no conducting, no musicians) • Instruct and manage a group of approximately 8 – 25 students. This position is for approximately 2 - 4 hours per week with additional hours for tech week and performances. • Fall/Winter Production Rehearsals o Wednesday Evenings and/or Saturday Mornings • Winter/Spring Production Rehearsals o Tuesday Evenings and/or Thursday Evenings • Additional hours required for tech week and performances of Main Stage Shows Qualified applicants must have two years of teaching experience as a Musical Director (Theater) or Choir Director. Bachelor’s degree in Music, Theater or Music Education from an accredited institution preferred. Candidates for this position will work closely with the Theater Department Coordinator and must be able to work with students of all ages and skill levels, with a specific focus on youth grades 4 – 8. Applicants must be professional and display leadership qualities in and out of the classroom and may be the lead instructor during rehearsals. In addition, the applicant should possess excellent problem solving, organizational and interpersonal skills. Applicants must be able to work in a team environment. This position is slotted as a P3 on Solon’s part-time wage scale which offers a starting range from $17.00/hour. Compensation will be determined based upon previous education, performance, and teaching experience. Makeshift Theatre in Akron seeks 2 Actors for staged reading this July Auditions via zoom this Saturday June 8th from 12-4. **Paid Opportunity** Play: West Side Waltz Synopsis: Holding out indomitably against advancing age, dwindling finances and failing health, Margaret Mary Elderdice, a widow and former concert pianist, resists the attempts of her violin-playing spinster neighbor, Cara Varnum, to move in with her. While she enjoys playing duets with Cara and gossiping about the other tenants in their upper West Side apartment building, Margaret Mary values her independence above the dubious comforts that the constant presence of the priggish Cara might provide. So Cara is shocked when Margaret Mary engages Robin Bird, a rather kooky young would-be actress, as her paid, live-in companion. Relations between the three are strewn with hilarious pitfalls from the start, with additional comic complications being provided by a malaprop-prone Rumanian building superintendent and an eager young lawyer-suitor whom Robin Bird brings home for dinner. Ultimately things do fall into place, and largely so because of the spirited will of Margaret Mary, who goads the others to rise above their problems, to stake a personal claim on life, and to resist, with all their strength, the infirmities and misfortunes that flesh is heir to. Thompson wrote the teleplay for and directed a CBS production that originally aired on Thanksgiving night in 1995. The cast included Shirley Maclaine, Liza Minnelli, Kathy Bates, Jennifer Grey, Estelle Harris, and Robert Pastorelli.
