Looking For Guidance About Getting Involved in the Theater Community

Dear Northeast Ohio Theater Community - I'd love to get some feedback and guidance on how to get involved in the theater community here. I’ve auditioned for several plays and at each one, let them know I’d love to help in any way needed…doesn't have to be a role in the play. It’s been many years since I’ve prepared for a part and there are lots of talented actors here. So, no offense at all taken that I haven’t secured a role yet. But I'd love to volunteer for any backstage position as well and I haven't quite figured out how to do that. I assume it differs from organization to organization, but any general advice would be appreciated!” I recently moved back to Cleveland from living in North Carolina for the past 14 years. Sadly, I left behind all my theater involvement back in high school—still trying to figure out how that happened as it was such and still is, a great fit for me on so many levels, fun, personal growth and socialization. I find I get along easily, happily and with great humor, with theater friends and would love to meet some here. I’ll be volunteering this week at the Playhouse for set design for the Jump Back Ball. I’d love to help with set, costumes, anything backstage, front of house, that doesn’t involve having to stay in one place for any extended period of time :). I’m a ball of energy and like to keep moving around. Love to hear from y’all :). Any and all ideas welcome! I’d be happy to host a get together or Meetup. If there are places in Cleveland where theater people hang out, that would be helpful to know. I don’t consume alcohol, so bars are not a good match for me :) Much thanks! Stop by the Goodyear Branch Library (60 Goodyear Blvd in Akron) on March 1 at 11 am to browse the stacks, sip free coffee, and listen to music by Jacob Trombetta. Jacob Trombetta (he/him) is a multi-media artist, bringing novel applications of technology to bear in artistic spaces. With the pedal steel as a focal point, Trombetta brings compositional expertise and a background spanning robotics, computer vision, and cryptography to produce uniquely atmospheric experiences. At 11:30 am, join Lune for Mindful Mornings. “Mindful Mornings” is an introductory class to mindfulness and the practice of loving-kindness meditation. Each class will feature guided grounding exercises, relaxation techniques, mindful movement and meditations to help expand our awareness, compassion for ourselves, our community and our world. All are welcome at this class! Each morning will be a little different so if you miss one or two don't feel like you can't return. Just come to the next one that fits in your schedule! Black PRODUCER: Le Chat Noir Productions ABOUT THE NANNY PROJECT Led by the Sankofa Sol Arts Inquiry Collective (SSAIC), The Nanny Project is an integrated arts-based inquiry project highlighting the lived experiences of diverse nannies employed during the pandemic years 2020-2023. Through the development of a diverse array of outputs, including but not limited to a verbatim theater play script, The Nanny Project seeks to elevate the essential work of nannies into public consciousness. The first reading of the prize-winning one-act piece at the American Folklore Society Meeting on November 8th, 2024 was met with success, highlighted in the feedback from the audience. Session participants emphasized the emotional and intellectual impact of the work, praising it as “beautiful” and “fabulous work.” The story’s exploration of themes like love, exploitation, sacrifice, and the lived experiences of women of color caregivers captivated listeners, with 100% of responses rating it as "extremely engaging’ on our feedback form. Many were moved by the representation of caregivers’ struggles for dignity and self-worth, particularly emphasizing the need to hear and advocate for these often-overlooked voices. ABOUT THE PLAY In a series of poignant verbatim reflections pulled directly from three interviews conducted by SSAIC from 2019-2023, You Can't Over Love Anything explores the complexities of caregiving, offering an unflinching look inside one of the most unregulated jobs in the nation: Nannying. *Monologue heavy CHARACTERS WOMAN 1: Black/30s WOMAN 2: Indian or Southeast Asian presenting/40s WOMAN 3: White/40s AUDITIONS You may request sides by emailing courtney@courtneylblack. Hey, aspiring voice actors! We’ve finally firmed-up the dates for our Spring Voice Acting Fundamentals class. We’ll meet each Saturday at 2PM from March 8 through April 12 at Colors Audio in Akron. The competitive landscape in voice acting is shifting. It’s more like a landslide. AI is making the untrained unemployable in this business. That’s my little commercial for “Get Trained.” If you’re already convinced you need training, what form should that take? Every learner is different, of course. But for a number of students the intersection between effective training and cost-effective training is Dan Popp’s Voice Acting Fundamentals class. Dan is an industry veteran of more than 3 decades, serving clients like John Deere, Goodyear, and Walmart. This class will give you tools and techniques for understanding what the potential client wants, and unleashing your creative potential to give it to them.
