Kelley. This hour-long event will begin with an introduction by Mill Editor-in-Chief Mary Simmons, followed by Ms. Kelley's reading, and end with an audience Q-and-A moderated by BW Senior Lillian McAfee. *Nambi E. Kelley: *Award-winning playwright/actress Nambi E. Kelley is currently in residence at New Victory Theatre through the LabWorks Program for BIPOC artists in New York City. She was chosen by Toni Morrison to adapt her novel *Jazz*. Her adaptation of Richard Wright’s *Native Son* has been seen across the country and premiered off-Broadway in 2019 at The Duke on 42nd Street (The Acting Company; AUDELCO Award for “Best Play”). Nambi is a former playwright-in-residence at the National Black Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, and a former Dramatists Guild Fellow. Choreographed by Associate Director of Dance Education Melanie Szucs, Anna Roberts and Rachel Soucie, this ballet follows the traditional production with a fresh and exuberant twist. With over 60 Beck Center dance students up to age 18, The Nutcracker 2021 showcases the best of Northeast Ohio's young talent. Melanie Szucs stated, "Nutcracker has been a biannual tradition for the dance department. We are using the traditional story, but each dancer stays in their allotted 'rectangle' on stage while dancing which has necessitated creativity from our staff choreographers. The ballet is being filmed one class at a time and edited into a full ballet. Local favorite Ron Newell will be tying it all together with his animated storytelling." During the workshop, you will be guided through prompted writings designed to draw from personal experiences, the experiences of family and friends, and/or stories of the pandemic encountered on social media; inspire hope; and remind us of the importance of love and empathy in the face of chaos. You will create and share new drafts with Dr. Weems and the other participants and receive feedback for editing. Playwrights Local Presents A Free Reading of a New Play *THE CANVAS* *Written by Justin LazorDirected by Melissa Crum* Wednesday, March 24 at 7:00 pm Presented Online via Zoom INFO & ZOOM ACCESS http://www.playwrightslocal.org/winter-roundtable-series-2021/ SYNOPSIS *The Canvas *is an examination of what we mean by “art” and a journey toward and across the thin line that separates art from violence. A scholarship student at an elite art school, Deborah finds it hard to fit in amongst her pretentious classmates, Gabriel and Michelle, who ostracize her for both her socioeconomic difference as well as her ideas about what constitutes art. When their flamboyant teacher, Professor Poisson, unveils his latest masterpiece, a completely blank canvas, Michelle and Gabriel fawn over his genius, but Deborah feels compelled to call “bullshit” and point out the fact that the emperor has no clothes. This sets into motion a heated battle of wits between teacher and student, which ultimately culminates in Deborah creating a shocking work of art that none of the others will ever forget.
