City Ballet of Cleveland holds its annual “Uniquely Cleveland Nutcracker” audition Sunday, September 15th from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm. The audition is open to all area ballet dancers ages 7 and older, with at least one year of ballet training. These young dancers will be dancing alongside professional ballet dancers including some dancers from Verb Ballets! Dancers auditioning for pointe roles, including Act I Snow and Act II Waltz of the Flowers, should wear their pointe shoes to audition. Potential dancers do not need to be students at Cleveland City Dance; however, students must be enrolled in class at their current studio or Cleveland City Dance during the rehearsal process. The Company Artistic and Executive Director, Courtney J. Laves-Mearini, will conduct the audition. The performances are scheduled for the weekend of December 14-15 at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Cleveland. For students with a dramatic or creative flair, Stagecrafters Theatre can be counted on to provide ample opportunities for expression and fun! Stagecrafters is a dramatic arts program which seeks to help each learner realize a positive self-image while being exposed to the creative aspects of drama and the discipline of theatre. The program’s classes and activities incorporate acting, singing, dance, movement, and design, with a focus on process over product. Classes are for students of different levels of experience and are designed to better language skills, cooperation, self-expression, and confidence in a non-competitive atmosphere. Theater professionals comprise the motivated, fun, and compassionate staff. We are happy to announce our Teen Academy show, GODSPELL. Auditions are the week of November 4. COLLEGE LIFE Located at 324 Cleveland Ave. NW Canton, Ohio 44702 SYNOPSIS:What’s in the minds and hearts of college students today? In 40 monologues and a few dialogues, this multicultural ensemble questions everything they encounter: social justice and gender identity, self-awareness and relationship boundaries, future prospects and roommate etiquette. What emerges is a humorous and heartbreaking portrait of a new generation struggling with higher education’s promise of “personal transformation.” Structured in three acts, the play begins with matriculation and ends with graduation. The monologues in Act I, titled “Great Expectations,” focus on encounters with new friends, financial aid, antidepressants, homework, sex, sleep deprivation and courses in physics and math. Act II, “Paradise Lost,” features parties, budding and broken relationships, unexpected encounters with race and religion, sexual orientation and hitting rock bottom. Act III, “Metamorphoses,” portrays students emerging from four years of challenge and change with surprising insights, political convictions and plans for a scary, uncertain future. The mixture of serious and comedic monologues captures the extreme difficulty—sometimes absurd and at other times overwhelming—of self-discovery and community-building. While the monologues convey the sense that students often feel alone in their quest for great success or simply survival, the ensemble itself presents a very different truth—at least they’re alone together. He is lonely, and is frustrated with trying to make friendships and romantic relationships work in New York City.
