Stow Players presents Kung Fu Kitty by Patrick Rainville and Jacob Dorn. Directed by Cris Hertle. Audition dates: September 15 and 16 starting at 5:30PM Performances November 14 at 6:30PM, November 15 and 16 at 2:30PM. We are casting children ages 6 to 10 for this play. Kids should have a monologue of less than one minute prepared and memorized to present at the audition. Children will also be reading from the script. They lie, they steal, they bully other kids, and they smoke smelly cigars. There used to be only one place where you’d never see them—church. This all changes when Charlie Bradley brags that his Sunday school offers free snacks. All six of the Herdmans show up at church in search of pizza, cookies and Hawaiian Punch, and end up in the Christmas pageant. Charlie’s mom, Grace, is the novice director, who not only casts them in the show but, much to the dismay of the other kids, let’s them play all the leads. Grace instantly finds herself caught between two forces of nature—the Herdmans and Helen Armstrong, who speaks for all of the outraged citizens of the town. *Our Audio Gallery Series at Negative Space officially kicks off on September 11 at 7:30 pm *at the beautiful Negative Space Gallery, located at 3820 Superior Avenue, 2nd Floor of the Asian Town Center building in Midtown Cleveland. Our first event celebrates the work of radio play pioneer Richard Durham. *Destination Freedom: An Evening of African American Radio Plays* Between 1948 and 1950, a radio series called Destination Freedom aired on WMAQ, a local Chicago NBC station. Richard Durham created Destination Freedom in an attempt to profile significant African American historical figures and their contributions to American democracy and freedom. Durham was a journalist, poet, dramatist, labor organizer, and one-time Communist Party member, who began his career as part of the Writer’s Project of the WPA and later worked as a writer for The Chicago Defender. In an era when African Americans were increasingly visible in the arts, though not always in positive roles, Durham’s scripts attempted to reclaim a triumphant narrative of their history. The plays will be followed by a discussion of the life and work of Richard Durham. Destination Freedom: An Evening of African American Radio Plays will be directed by Darelle Hill, and the cast includes Debrail Erskine, Keisha Jackson, Marta Jones, Janella Leach and Corin Self. Ygal Kaufman will serve as the Sound Effects Artist. The Executive Producer of the Audio Gallery Series is John Watts. Harry Boomer will moderate the post performance discussion. Overview and Important Dates Auditions General auditions were held earlier this week, but we are still in need of 2-3 high school actresses to complete the cast. Available Characters The original production featured a small cast, and each performer played multiple characters. Depending on interest, there may be opportunities to play a single character, or to play multiple characters as part of a larger role. The play lovingly examines the movie itself, the period in which it was made, and the film’s undying influence on the horror genre. More than just a recreation of the story, the play celebrates the history and influence of the movie. Through a series of multiple endings, the characters are all faced with different issues and challenges while desperately trying to survive the night. However, their contrasting personalities and agendas always seem to prevent the group from working together. Which leaves us all wondering: Could anyone survive a night of the living dead?
