Lake Erie College: Solo Show Festival--Call for applicants (Sept 27-30)

On the weekend of Sept 27-30, the Lake Erie College Department of Theatre will be hosting a Solo Show festival. Each evening will feature a different headliner performing their original one-person show. Here is the line up: Sept 27: Eric Jaffe C- Sept 28: Paul Strickland Balls of Yarn Sept 29: Nancy Ma Home Sept 30 Chris Lambert An Evening with Orson Welles Each evening will consist of two parts, with each headliner being the second half of the show. The first half of the show will be 3-5 short pieces made up of local performers. So, we invite anyone who does this style of performing and who wishes to be considered to share their work as part of this event to submit an expression of interest. Any form of solo, oral storytelling will be considered, especially original stories or monologues. Anyone can apply, students, amateurs, professionals. Ideally pieces would be approximately 5-10 minutes in length. Typically people will be scheduled for one of the nights, but more might be possible. There is no pay, but each performer will receive two weekend passes to see all of the shows and be welcomed at all receptions or events. To apply, please send an email with a description of your performance to Dr. Jerry Jaffe. If any video exists, please share a link. Use this email: <jjaffe(a)lec.edu>. August 30 is the deadline to submit a proposal. Participants will decided by September 1. Depending upon the number and/or quality of applicants, there may be a need for further information. Ciamacco has a knack for taking lesser-known works and bringing them to vibrant life in the intimate venue. Ciamacco's cast also earns a standing ovation for their colorful characterizations and vocal prowess. Danny Simpson and Neely Gevaart instill determination, humor and hella-good voices into the central couple who are trying to find answers while trying not to fall in love. In the same way, Tony Heffner and Kate Michalski display confidence, control and killer vocals as a pair of bohemians who help them on their journey. Review of "We WIll Rock You" at Blank Canvas Theatre

Surprisingly, Blank Canvas’ ‘We Will Rock You’ most certainly does Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, American Theatre Critics Association I kid you not. Ben Elton’s musical “We Will Rock You” tells the ridiculous tale of a small group of rebels in a highly corporatized dystopian future who are looking for a savior to revive the lost poetry once known as rock 'n' roll and save the souls of a lost world. The show uses the songs of Queen as both its soundtrack and the resistance fighters’ sacred text. And it borrows heavily from the 1930s and 1940s sci-fi motion picture serials to build its vision of dystopia, fashion the dark evildoers who control it, and generate the hero who will give them their comeuppance. Sounds horrible, right? When the show premiered in the West End of London in 2002, it was uniformly panned by critics. The Guardian noted that the show was “manufactured” and devised to create “unlikely ways to wring out another Queen song.” The Daily Telegraph wrote that the musical was "guaranteed to bore you rigid” while The Daily Mirror suggested that the playwright be shot. But this musical is a marvelous confection in the hands of Blank Canvas director Patrick Ciamacco, who has a history of turning idiotic, idiosyncratic works like “Psycho Beach Party” and “Texas Chain Saw Musical” into surprisingly entertaining enterprises.
