Nunsense Synopsis: Written by Dan Goggin, and Winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best Off Broadway Musical, Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth-grade production of Grease. The audience meets Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap dancing, a nun ballet, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. Characters: (The roles listed below are from the script. Ages can vary.) Sister Mary Regina, Mother Superior: Female, 60s (Range: B3-F5) A feisty overweight Sophie Tucker-type who can't resist the spotlight. Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices: Female, mid 50's (Range: G3-F5) The second in command, she is always competing with the Mother Superior. Sister Robert Anne: Female, Mid 30's (Range:G3-D5) A streetwise taught character from Brooklyn. A constant source of aggravation for the Mother Superior. Sister Mary Amnesia: Female, Late 30's (Range: Db4-C6) This nun lost her memory after a crucifix fell on her head. She is very sweet. Weathervane Playhouse to present Jane Martin's Talking With... 11 stories from 11 women set to grace the Dietz Stage AKRON - Weathervane Playhouse presents the first Dietz Theater production of the season as Jane Martin's iconic monologue play Talking With... is set to run November 2 - 22 in Weathervane's intimate Dietz Theater. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. There is also a single Saturday matinee performance on November 11 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10- $22 and are available by calling the box office at 330-836-2626 or by going to www.weathervanplayhouse.com<http://www.weathervanplayhouse.com> Talking With... is a play made up of monologues, each eight to ten minutes long and featuring a different female character who talks about their life and personal ordeals. These idiosyncratic characters amuse, move, frighten, and speak from the depths of their souls. They include a baton twirler, a fundamentalist snake handler, an ex-rodeo rider and an actress willing to go to any length to get a job. Many of the monologues are touching, some are intensely emotional, and a couple are even comical. All of the pieces, however, show how the varied experiences and events in one's life affect who we are as humans. These extraordinary monologues received a standing ovation when they premiered at The Actors Theatre of Louisville and won the 1982 American Theatre Critics Association Award for Best Regional Play. Jane Martin, a Kentuckian, first came to national attention for Talking With..., a collection of monologues premiering in Actors Theatre of Louisville's 1982 Humana Festival of New American Plays. Since its New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club in 1982, Talking With... has been performed around the world, winning the Best Foreign Play of the Year Award in Germany from Theatre Heute magazine. Her other work includes: Vital Signs, Cementville, Keely And Du (Pulitzer Prize nominee; 1994 American Theatre Critics Association Best New Play Award), Jack And Jill (1997 American Theatre Critics Association Best New Play Award), Anton In Show Business (2001 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg Principal Citation), Mr. Bundy, and Flaming Guns Of The Purple Sage. Good Boys premiered at Guthrie Theater in 2002. Flags was co-produced by Guthrie Theater and Mixed Blood in 2004, and her most recent work, Sez She, premiered at Illusion Theatre in April 2006. Weathervane's production of Talking With... includes performances by a kitten named Pongo courtesy of Paws and Prayers and a ball python named Bedford courtesy of The Herps Alive Foundation. The Caucasian Chalk Circle Opens Shahrazad Theatre Company’s Inaugural Season Ensemble Theatre presents Shahrazad Theatre Company’s adaptation of Bertold Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle October 27 -- November 12 Fridays & Saturdays - 8pm Sundays - 2pm Ensemble’s Playground Theatre Space Cleveland Heights, OH (October 24, 2017) -- Ensemble Theatre ushers in the next generation of Cleveland theatre as the incubator for the new Shahrazad Theatre Company (STC). The new company is co-founded by three Artistic Associates of Ensemble and graduates of Hiram College, Kayla Davis (‘14), Kyle Huff (‘14), and August Scarpelli (‘16). Shahrazad Theatre Company’s inaugural production is of Bertolt Brecht’s parable, The Caucasian Chalk Circle (translated and adapted by STC) performed in Ensemble’s Playground Theatre -- 2843 Washington Blvd, Cleveland Heights OH 44118. Much like Ensemble Theatre, STC is dedicated to works that “celebrate the human spirit and it’s struggle.” Much like the revolutionary playwrights and artists who changed the conversations theatre could have, STC believes a fresh and living light can be shed on the facets and flaws of the modern human condition. Chalk Circle features a group of well-known local actors including Robert Hawkes, Valerie Young, James Rankin, Tim Young, Andrew Keller, Katelyn Rotuno, Hannah Storch, Steve Vase-Hansell, Allen Branstein, Kayla Davis, and August Scarpelli. Kyle Huff is directing the STC adaptation. About The Caucasian Chalk Circle: With the help of a few wayward actors, two divided and destitute post-war villages in the middle of a heated debate over “their” land, share the story of Grusha, a peasant who is given an abandoned and noble child whom she chooses to raise as her own. It is a long and dangerous journey into the northern mountains to find the child a home; all while her beloved fiance is at war. Meanwhile, the city is in flames -- a scoundrel and drunkard is appointed judge, and suddenly the child's mother decides she wants him back! Grusha is put on trial. In this "golden age,” law and justice will be tested; will it bend or will it break? In light of Ensemble theatre’s 2017/18 season entitled “We the People” and the recent events concerning the future of the Coventry Corner, the last lines of the play resound clearly: “And you who have listened to the story of the chalk circle, Bear in mind the age-old wisdom: That all things should belong to those who would do well by them, Children to the motherly, so they may thrive, Cars to good drivers, so they may be well driven.
