THE FLOOR IS LAVA! by Ruby Gibson, 11th Grade, Shaker Heights High School, Shaker Heights WE ALL GOT NICKNAMES by Krystal Ivy, 12th Grade, St. Martin de Porres High School, Cleveland All submitted plays received scores from at least three readers and were judged on the basis of imagination, human values, and the uniqueness of the playwright’s voice. “The quality of the submitted plays this year made the judges’ work especially difficult,” said Festival Producer Jonathan Wilhelm. “But, I believe that the final roster of plays display an astonishing creative spectrum from the whimsical and absurd to profound reflections on current issues.” “Reading the submissions was an absolute joy,” agreed Carrie Williams, Dobama Theatre’s new Education Associate. “Now we are eager to get the Festival production underway, and look forward to bringing these plays to life.” The Marilyn Bianchi Kids’ Playwriting Festival is an integral part of Dobama Theatre’s mission to provide educational and outreach programming. The Festival’s mission is to provide a platform for children to express their thoughts, hopes, dreams and creativity through the writing of original plays. Through the production of these plays, the Festival strives to form a community of local artists and provide creative opportunities to all who wish to participate. All winners will be honored at the Opening Night Benefit on June 2, 2017 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25 each. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 216.932.3396 or online at dobama.org. Additional Festival performances will take place on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm and on Sunday, June 4 at 2:30 pm. All of these performances are free and open to the General Public. Needed: Aladdin Jr. Costumes Sizes: Child S through Adult L Dates: April 18 - May 8, 2017 Needed: Arabian costumes, harem pants, turbans Compensation: Advertisement in production program and two complimentary tickets. Greetings fellow artists! My school, a PK-8 school in Cleveland Metropolitan School District, is currently putting together a production of Aladdin Jr. through the Disney Musicals in Schools program. Although it’s a great honor to be chosen by Playhouse Square and Disney to implement a new musical theatre program in our school, our budget is VERY small/limited. We have a cast of about 25 that I am currently trying to figure out costumes for. I am looking for costumes for donation or to borrow for the production. I would need them from Tuesday, April 18 through Monday, May 8. Yes, this is a school production but I can guarantee that the costumes will be well kept, locked away during the school day, and will return as they were when they arrived. I am in need of children and adult sizes: harem pants, gypsy skirts, vests, arabian women’s clothing, turbans, ANYTHING you may think could help us out. If the borrow or donation is coming from a business or local theatre, we’re happy to advertise your theatre in our program as well as provide complimentary tickets for the community performance on Friday, May 6. Bernard has planned a romantic weekend with his chic Parisian mistress, and a cordon bleu chef for style and class, but not including his wife, Jacqueline. His strategy rests on his best friend, Robert, to provide a foolproof alibi. Needless to say, nothing works out as planned. Suppose Robert turns up not realizing why he has been invited. Suppose Jacqueline will NOT leave for the weekend. Suppose there is a myriad of role reversals and secrets. Suppose everyone’s alibi gets confused with everyone else’s. The Tempest A play by William Shakespeare The setting is an “un-inhabited island” somewhere in the sea between the north coast of Africa and the Mediterranean coast of Italy. Queen Alonza, of Naples is returning from Africa where she has overseen the marriage of her sister, to the prince of Tunis. As the Queen’s ship enters the magical range of the enchanted island, Prospero, banished duke and bookish sorcerer, seizes the opportunity. He designs a series of events that will punish his enemies while restoring himself and his fifteen-year-old daughter, Miranda, to power in Italy. Prospero’s airy spirit, Ariell, petitions the Orishas of waters and tempests to create a devastating sea storm. The tempest shipwrecks the queen’s party and disperses the travelers about the island, causing each to despair that the others have perished. Amidst this unfolding drama, the young Miranda, Caliban, and Ferdinand each follow a voyage of passage of their own as they encounter the harbingers of a brave new world. Full of magic, mystery, pageantry and conflict, the first recorded performance of The Tempest was on November 1st in 1611. The play is both a comedy and a tragedy. It has been performed all over the world for more than 400 years continuing to inspire and delight. This production features original music and dance as well as an art installation of student-created artworks designed to bring the characters and imagined flora and fauna of the island to life. *Directed by Miriam Bennett.
