Blank Canvas delivers an entertaining but off-balanced ‘Cabaret’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics While theatrical journeys back to the burgeoning Nazi movement of 1930 Germany are meant to be disturbing, Joe Masteroff’s “Cabaret” – with gorgeous music by John Kander and poignant lyrics by Fred Ebb – manages to be enthralling and entertaining as well. Blank Canvas Theatre’s production, under Patrick Ciamacco, is most certainly entertaining, but some conceptual and casting missteps keep it from scoring many points as an enthralling production. The Broadview Heights Spotlights Theater will hold auditions for Alan Menken’s “Weird Romance” on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4 from 3:00PM – 5:00PM and MONDAY, DECEMBER 5 from 6:00PM – 9:00PM. No appointment needed. Callbacks will be held the afternoon of Saturday, December 10, by invitation only. Auditions are open to those ages 15 and up. Auditioners of all skill and experiences levels are welcome. Rehearsals will begin the week of January 2nd and will typically run Sunday – Thursday evenings with some Friday/Saturday rehearsals, based on cast availability. The show will run on weekends from February 10 – February 25. The show is directed and musically directed by Ryan Bergeron. The Choreographer is Jessica Sopko. Technical Design is by Tim Anderson. Costume Design is by Stephanie Giammarco. Those auditioning should: · Plan to attend only one night. While attendees need not arrive at the beginning of auditions, *please plan to check in no less than 60 minutes prior to the end of auditions*. Attendees will be seen in order of check-in. · Prepare two contrasting songs, *preferably* *in the style of the show* (1 ballad, 1 up tempo), no more than one minute in length each. The original cast recording is available for listening online via Spotify, YouTube, etc. If you are unable to prepare selections in the style of the show, come prepared with your strongest audition material. · Bring sheet music in the correct keys, *hole-punched and in a three-ring binder.* Singers will not be permitted to sing *a cappella *(without sheet music). It features a musical score by Tony, Grammy, and Oscar winning composer Alan Menken (*Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, Enchanted, Tangled, Sister Act, Newsies).* It debuted off-broadway at the WPA Theatre, starring Ellen Greene (of *Little Shop of Horrors *fame), Johnathan Hardary, Jessica Molaskey, Sal Viviano, and Danny Burstein. This curious science fiction framework revolves around traditional themes - the generation gap, a love triangle and the archetypal conflict between those who have power and those who have none. In the first act, *The Girl Who Was Plugged In*, we encounter a homeless bag-lady whose soul is transplanted into the body of a gorgeous female android by a company which manufactures celebrities. The second act, *Her Pilgrim Soul*, is about a scientist who researches holographic imaging. DON'T MISS THIS ONE. BRING THE ENTIRE FAMILY! I had the pleasure of attending Thursday night's preview performance of The Little Mermaid at Lakewood's Beck Center of the Arts. I've seen this play performed by other groups in the past, but nothing that equaled this production. It could be plucked off the stage and placed in a Broadway theater, it was that good. Director Scott Spence has outdone himself on this show. The musical direction of Larry Goodpaster and choreography by Martín Céspedes was outstanding. Katherine Rooney as Ariel was the perfect blend of naive and determined. Shane Patrick O'Neill has the kind of dreamy voice every prince deserves. Natalie Blalock is "show stoppingly amazing" as the wicked Ursula, and Darryl Lewis is the frustrated, stern but loving King Triton. Also, I can't go without giving special kudos to Robert Pierce. His phenomenal powerful voice grabs you immediately as the show opens, and I lost count of how many parts he played throughout...the most memorable of course, being the hilarious Chef Louis. The other principals and ensemble cast** were all well cast and extremely talented. Do yourself a favor and see this show. It's as good or better than anything you might see at Playhouse Square. Auditions for "The Music Man" at OTHT

Olde Towne Hall Theatre located at 36119 Center Ridge Road (just west of Rt 83) in North Ridgeville, OH will be holding auditions for Meredith Willson's "The Music Man", Sunday, December 18th from 2 - 4 pm & Monday, December 19th from 7 - 9 pm. Auditions are conducted at the theater. Plan to stay for the entire audition period and be prepared to sing a song (you may bring piano music for the accompanist), perhaps perform a few dance steps & read a portion of the script provided. You must commit to rehearsals from early January through mid February and performance dates the 3rd & 4th weekends of Feb & 1st & 2nd weekends of March. There are a limited number of pre-teen age & teen parts. Most parts are in the 25-45 age range although actors outside this range should not hesitate to audition if they can age up or down which, of course, many can.
