Area-Premiere: Queen of the Mistat the Broadview Heights Spotlights The Broadview HeightsSpotlights will present the non-New-York-City premiere of Michael JohnLaChiusa’s musical, The Queen of the Mist. The play tells theamazing, true story of Anne Edson Taylor, a 63-year-old school teacher who, onOctober 24, 1901, was the first person to travel over Niagara Falls in a barreland survive. This year marks the 115th anniversary of herremarkable feat. This production will be exclusively sponsored by The DennisAgency: Insure for Epic Drama. The show is directed byTim Anderson, music directed by Ryan Bergeron, and choreographed by ZacHudak. Peggy Newton stars as the ambitious Anne, and Nick Bailey playsthe role of Frank Russell, her manager. The show also features a quintetof five performers including Lydia Hall, Pam Matthews, Justin Schickler, AdamBowers, and Tim Anderson. Jean Brennan is the stage manager. “We happened to bein New York City five years ago and saw the original production. I wasmesmerized by this woman and by the ridiculously beautiful music,” saidAnderson. “The piece is so well crafted and lends itself to inventive stagingand storytelling. When the performance rights became available, I jumpedat the opportunity to get to do it.” The Spotlights is the second theater everto produce this musical. Coincidentally, shortlyafter rehearsals began at the Spotlights, a fifth-anniversary concert featuringthe original Off-Broadway cast was announced. Several members of the Spotlights’cast and production team are traveling to New York to see the concert inOctober. The Spotlights’production runs from November 4 through 20. Performances will occur onFriday and Saturday evenings at 7:30PM, and there will be a Sunday matinee onNovember 13 at 3:00PM. All performances are held at the BroadviewHeights Cultural Arts Building, 9543 Broadview Road in Broadview Heights (nextto the police station). Tickets are $15 foradults and $14 for seniors and students. The play contains a few momentsof specific adult language and is not recommended for children or people whoare easily offended. Hey NEOhioPAL! Esperanza, Inc. needs your help! We are looking for 100 mentors in 100 days to leave a positive impact on our college students lives! We are also looking for 100 mentees! These mentors will be paired with college students, some of them first generation college attendees, for one year to help them transition into the college life. Mentors are asked to take 1 minute, 2-3 times a week to text, FaceTime, Skype, call, meet in person or email their students to find out how they are adjusting to college. They also should meet face-to-face twice in that year. Mentors and students are matched for one year from the start of the relationship. Matches will be made in mid-December with the kickoff event taking place January 5th. After one year students and mentors can decide to recommit to another year. Students and mentors create their own schedule of communication! Our College Mentorship program just requires 30 minutes a month. *August Wilson's Radio Golf* East Cleveland Theater is hosting auditions for August Wilson's Radio Golf. Part of Wilson's, The Century Cycle, it is the last play in his 10-play series. Radio Golf takes place in Pittsburgh, PA, in the 1990s. We are looking for 5 African-American actors, 4 male and 1 female. *Synopsis:* What price would you pay in order to stay true to yourself and beliefs? This is the dilemma we confront in Radio Golf. Surrounded by a backdrop of politics, ambitions, traditions and friendships, all involved must answer this question for themselves. *The Roles:* *Harmond Wilks*: African American (male, middle-age) A real-estate developer, Ivy League-educated, well-spoken and ambitious. He inherited the business from his father but he has big dreams of a very prominent future in politics as well. While in the midst of a big housing development project potentially worth millions, he is running to be the first African-American Mayor of Pittsburgh. Harmond is honest to a fault and committed to his beliefs. *Mame Wilks:* African American (female, middle age) Harmond’s wife of many years, she is a well-educated, successful and ambitious public relations executive. Though she is rising within her own career, Mame wants Harmond to rise with her, so she is helping him with his mayoral run. Mame is smart and manipulative but caring. She will go to bat for what she believes in but there are limits, even for her. *Roosevelt Hicks: *African American (male, middle age) Recently promoted to a vice-presidential position at Mellon Bank, Roosevelt is clever and a bit of a hustler. His education is average but he has worked hard to get what he has. He is determined to overcome what he perceives as the limitations placed on him by society and is willing to risk almost anything to do it. A long-time friend of Harmond, he is involved in the real-estate deal and mayoral campaign. *Sterling Johnson:* African American (male, middle age) A neighborhood handyman/contractor, poorly educated and an old time friend of Harmond. Life has not been kind to Sterling so he is very rough around the edges but deceptively street smart. He robbed a bank many years ago and paid the price. Sterling has learned to be a hustler through experience but wants what everyone wants, a good life. *Elder Joseph Barlow:* African American (male, older) He seems like the nicest man you could ever meet but Elder Joseph hides a dark past. He presents an addled and feeble demeanor with a wink and a smile but he has a criminal record that stretches back many, many years. He is very clever and sly in the way he hooks his victims.
