East Cleveland Theater is hosting auditions for August Wilson's Radio Golf. Part of Wilson's, The Century Cycle, it is the last play in his 10-play series. Radio Golf takes place in Pittsburgh, PA, in the 1990s. We are looking for 5 African-American actors, 4 male and 1 female. *Synopsis:* What price would you pay in order to stay true to yourself and beliefs? This is the dilemma we confront in Radio Golf. Surrounded by a backdrop of politics, ambitions, traditions and friendships, all involved must answer this question for themselves. *The Roles:* *Harmond Wilks*: African American (male, mid 30’s – to late 40’s) A real-estate developer, Ivy League-educated, well-spoken and ambitious. He inherited the business from his father but he has big dreams of a very prominent future in politics as well. While in the midst of a big housing development project potentially worth millions, he is running to be the first African-American Mayor of Pittsburgh. Harmond is honest to a fault and committed to his beliefs. *Mame Wilks:* African American (female, mid 30’s – to late 40’s) Harmond’s wife of many years, she is a well-educated, successful and ambitious public relations executive. Though she is rising within her own career, Mame wants Harmond to rise with her, so she is helping him with his mayoral run. Mame is smart and manipulative but caring. She will go to bat for what she believes in but there are limits, even for her. *Roosevelt Hicks: *African American (male, late 30’s – 40’s) Recently promoted to a vice-presidential position at Mellon Bank, Roosevelt is clever and a bit of a hustler. His education is average but he has worked hard to get what he has. He is determined to overcome what he perceives as the limitations placed on him by society and is willing to risk almost anything to do it. A long-time friend of Harmond, he is involved in the real-estate deal and mayoral campaign. *Sterling Johnson:* African American (male, mid to late 40’s) A neighborhood handyman/contractor, poorly educated and an old time friend of Harmond. Life has not been kind to Sterling so he is very rough around the edges but deceptively street smart. He robbed a bank many years ago and paid the price. Sterling has learned to be a hustler through experience but wants what everyone wants, a good life. *Elder Joseph Barlow:* African American (male, late 60’s – 70’s) He seems like the nicest man you could ever meet but Elder Joseph hides a dark past. He presents an addled and feeble demeanor with a wink and a smile but he has a criminal record that stretches back many, many years. He is very clever and sly in the way he hooks his victims. That is how he has gotten through life. Harmond is his latest. *Director: Jim Weaver, SDC* *Audition Dates:* Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:30pm Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 11:00 to 3:00pm *Show Dates:* Shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 11 shows total Opening: Friday, February 03, 2017 Closing: Sunday, February 26, 2017 Friday and Saturday shows start at 8pm Sunday shows start at 3pm EXCEPTION: There be no show on Sunday, February 05, 2017 … Super Bowl Sunday. *Rehearsals:* This will be a split rehearsal schedule, meaning that we will have 2 weeks of rehearsals in December, 2016 (before Christmas), and then pick up with rehearsals starting the week of January 08, 2017. In this hilarious and devastating dark comedy by Robert O'Hara (Bootycandy, Antebellum), the O'Mallerys have gathered in their local park to share some barbecue and straight talk with their train wreck of a sister Barbara, whose spiral of drugs and recklessness has forced her siblings to stage an open-air intervention. But the event becomes raucous and unpredictable as familial stereotypes collide with hard realities, and racial politics slam up against the stories we tell-and maybe even believe-about who we were and who we've become. "Fearless" - The New York Times - Regional Premiere. Looking to cast... 1 Woman - African American- Movie Star Barbara, age 30-40 (a very successful pop star & movie star) 1 Man - Caucasian - James T, age 50-60 (an unsuccessful, pseudo-functioning alcoholic) 1 Woman - African American - Adlean, age 30-45 (a breast cancer patient, addicted to pain killers All other roles have been cast. Medina Show Biz Opening You Can’t Take It with You this Friday Medina, OH – On October 14, 2016, Medina Show Biz is excited to open their 36th season with You Can’t Take It with You, a hilarious comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, and directed by Frank Lucas. The play will run Oct 14-30, Fridays & Saturdays 7:30pm, and Sundays 2:00p, at the Haddad Theater inside the Medina County Administration Building, located at 144 N. Broadway, Medina, Ohio. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students 18 and under. Tickets are available at Buehler’s or online at www.medinashowbiz.org. The plot follows the wacky Sycamore family, headed up by patriarch Grandpa Vanderhof (Charlie Richards). This family blissfully goes through life doing whatever brings them joy. Some of their favorite hobbies include ballet dancing, painting, building fireworks, writing plays, and collecting snakes. Their happy existence is interrupted when young Alice Sycamore (Natalina Kotori) becomes engaged to Kirby & Co. Vice President, Tony Kirby (Andrew Knode). Alice does her best to whip her family into shape to meet the new In-laws over a perfectly “normal” dinner, but disaster strikes when the Kirby’s arrive a day early, to find the Vanderhof/Sycamore clan in all their glory. The six-evening run includes 8 PM performances on Fridays and Saturdays through November 5. Tickets are $12, general admission. WHO'S AFRAID was Albee's Broadway debut and won five Tony Awards, including Best Play, in 1963. It ran for more than a year and a half, finding its way to the big screen in 1966 with the famous Mike Nichols adaptation starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Albee's ruthless and riveting drama has been enthralling and shocking audiences ever since. CVLT's production features actors Rob Walter and Darlene Rocco as 'George' and 'Martha', the embittered married couple who invite their younger counterparts, 'Nick' (John Hickman) and 'Honey' (Jennifer Betz), over for a night-cap following a university faculty party. What begins as a friendly invitation quickly spirals into a booze-soaked battle of psychological warfare, hurtling through the darker sides of marriage, academia, and the human condition, to reach an explosive conclusion. As with all of Albee's works, WHO'S AFRAID holds an often-unflattering mirror up to its characters and, by extension, the audience. In interviews with the New York Times and The Guardian, Albee described it as the writer's job to raise that mirror. "All of my plays are about people missing the boat, closing down too young, coming to the end of their lives with regret at things not done, as opposed to things done," he said. "We're not merely decorative, pleasant, and safe." CVLT's River Street Playhouse is the venerable non-profit's intimate 62-seat "black box" stage, offering audiences an up-close seat for the withering dialog and emotional fireworks on stage. WHO'S AFRAID was seen at CVLT in the same space thirty-four years ago. The script contains very strong language and adult themes and is therefore not recommended for sensitive audiences or those under age sixteen.
