Ruthless! is an Off-Broadway sensation featuring book and lyrics by Joel Paley and music by Marvin Laird. The winner of "Best Off-Broadway Musical" from the Outer Critics Circle, this story stars Tina Denmark-the greatest song-and-dance sensation to ever hit the third grade. When her school holds auditions for Pippi in Tahiti, Tina proves she will do anything to play the lead...anything! This outrageous production spoofs musicals such as Gypsy and Mame, as well as classic films including The Bad Seed and All About Eve. Even The New York Times agrees, "the fun comes from the sheer brazenness." Beck Center's former artistic director, William Roudebush, returns to direct this hilarious musical for the new theater season. "Ruthless! is Gypsy on steroids. It is an unforgiving satirical romp through every show business cliché including backstage back stabbing and self-involved shameless self-promotion," remarked Roudebush. "How could I not want to direct this musical?" (Akron, Ohio) Real Edge Dance Company (aka: RED) will present its Sixth Season annual fall concert entitled “PRISM” October 14,15,16, 2016 at the Paul A. Daum Theater in Akron, Ohio. The concert will feature premier modern dance works by RED Artistic Director Kelli Sanford (recent recipient of the 2016 Summit Artspace Arts Alive Award for Outstanding Artist in Dance) and Guest Dance Artist Damien Highfield (professional dancer with Groundworks Dance Theater), as well as the return of two dance works from prior seasons of RED that will be performed by company dancers Kelli Sanford, Chelsea Shump, Mary Vaccani, Darcie Lemons, Karina Browne, Kaylee Behringer. The finale dance work will feature community dancers Brittany Clark, Elaine Dowling, Owen Strasser, Laura Sarafian, Rosylnn McCluskey, Sunday Homitz, and Ana Starzyk in a special collaborative outreach project. “PRISM” will be performed Friday October 14, 2016 at 7:30pm; Saturday October 15, 2016 at 7:30pm; and Sunday October 16, 2016 at 3:00pm. What exactly is The Manhattan Project - Cleveland Lab? The Manhattan Project is a low-stakes, nonthreatening place for actors and playwrights to meet and work together. Based on the Theatre Lab model taught at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and inspired by The Brooklyn Generator in New York, The Manhattan Project wants to introduce Cleveland actors and playwrights to each other by organizing a bi-monthly production of brand new 10-minute plays. Participating artists will meet early in the month and will be broken into teams, each with one playwright. The playwright will then be given a writing prompt to write a new 10-minute play based on the prompt and including all the team's actors. The rest of the evening the team members will get to know each other and get a feel for each other's skills and voices. The teams will reconvene later in the month to perform these plays for each other. These 10-minute plays are not an end in themselves. Through these small collaborations we hope to build relationships between the two most vulnerable artists in theatre; the actors who put themselves on stage and the playwrights who pour themselves onto the page. Perhaps these 10-minute plays will grow into longer works or maybe these collaborations will become partnerships on larger projects.
