WHAT Lorain County Community College Theatre Department is looking for students and community members to audition for its Fall Mainstage production, the wildly hilarious, grotesque, taboo-shattering, ground breaking avant-garde classic, UBU ROI, by Alfred Jarry, directed by Terence Cranendonk. This is a non-equity production. Rehearsals will begin Monday, October 3 and performance dates are November 17, 18, and 19, 2016. If you are cast, expect to rehearse Monday through Thursday evenings, as well as Sunday afternoons, for 4 to 5 hours. WHAT TO PREPARE: Please prepare a two-minute ³mini performance² that incorporates speaking text (a theatrical monologue, a poem, or a passage from a novel or short story, for example) and a special skill that you have (such as acrobatics, gymnastics, tumbling/rolling, magic, mentalism, puppetry, ventriloquism, juggling, unicycling, playing spoons, ukulele, playing a musical instrument of any kind, hula hooping, baton twirling, dancing, singing, yo-yoing, bird calling, kazoo, etc.) If you do not have any of the skills on this list, please add one of your ownthis is not an optional part of the audition. I am looking for your creativity in being able to combine your text with another skill. Remember, playing an instrument (even a kazoo) or singing qualifies. (12-14 years old) Synopsis: It is Christmas Eve, and George Bailey stands on a bridge looking over the icy waters below, contemplating suicide. Joseph, an unseen angel, calls on The Boss for advice, and they decide on Clarence Oddbody, an Angel Second Class who, after 200 years, has yet to earn his wings. Joseph takes Clarence into the past to see George as a boy, rescuing his brother from drowning, enduring a beating from grieving druggist Gower, saving a child from accidental poisoning, then growing up to forgo college so he can save the family business and keep the citizens of Bedford Falls from being ruined by the Depression and the machinations of the conniving Henry Potter. George marries his childhood sweetheart, has a family, and resigns himself to a life of "failure." When his Uncle Billy misplaces $8,000 of the Building and Loan's money, George takes responsibility and runs to the bridge to commit suicide. Clarence stops him, and when George wishes he had never been born, makes the wish come true. Now George wanders through a Bedford Falls that has been rechristened Pottersville and has fallen far without him to save it. He realizes how many lives he has touched, how many people he has helped—and that he has been a success, after all. Clarence brings him back to "his" Bedford Falls and even manages to make Henry Potter pay for his sins. Community critic review of "Dearly Beloved" at Workship Players Theatre in Amherst

Workshop Players’ ‘Dearly Beloved’ is chock-full of southern-fried charm Nikolet Hermida Everything about Workshop Players’ “Dearly Beloved” is inviting. It starts with the playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. They go by the cute collective “Jones Hope Wooten” in their credits and produce nothing but amiable, ultralight-weight comedies that have quickly become community theater staples, including “The Dixie Swim Club,” “Southern Hospitality,” “The Hallelujah Girls,” “The Red Velvet Cake War” and “Christmas Belles” (recently performed by Workshop Players). Every one of their works comes with wonderfully witty dialogue from a quirky ensemble of down-home characters that feature strong women. And most take place in small towns seeping with southern-fried charm and full of juicy gossip. Nikolet Hermida is a senior at Cleveland State University majoring in Public Relations/Journalism, whose review is supported by a Civic Engagement grant.
