Feminism is a dish best served hot in Mamaí’s ‘Top Girls’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics The dinner table – where two or more contrary characters are required by convention, circumstance or social obligation to sit and talk – is often used as the centerpiece great plays. It’s there where proper etiquette and unpleasant temperament collide, resulting in character-defining discomfort, unexpected disclosure and some really good theater. Shakespeare had Macbeth join Lady Macbeth and various Lords for dinner, only to find his place occupied by Banquo's ghost. The Bard served up some chilling cuisine during the notorious family feast in “Titus Andronicus.” The extent of southern family dysfunction and the epitome of narcissistic bohemian behavior unfold over dinner in Tracy Letts “August: Osage County” and Noël Coward's “Hay Fever,” respectively. It can be argued that some of the most memorable moments in thrillers such as Patrick Hamilton's “Rope,” comedies like Bernard Shaw's “You Never Can Tell,” dramas like Tennessee Williams' “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and such sentimental storytelling as Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” take place at the table. And this is certainly the case with “Top Girls,” Caryl Churchill’s treatise on women breaking the glass ceiling that premiered in 1982 at London's Royal Court Theatre, during the cusp of the equal rights movement at the start of the Thatcher era. No taller then5ft 1 will be expected. Must be able to pass fitness exam. White or tan skin color. Verb Ballets is offering a new Int/Advanced Ballet beginning on June 21, 2016. The new class on Tuesday from 6:00-7:30 pm will work on grace, precision of movement and elaborate formal gestures, steps and poses. Coordination, strength, flexibility, rhythm and musicality are all emphasized. This class will leave students refreshed and stimulated--both physically and artistically. Ballet shoes are required. Playwrights Local 4181 proudly concludes its world premiere of Les Hunter’s contemporary drama To the Orchard. Directed by Dale Heinen, the play runs for a final weekend, June 10 through 12, at Dobama Theatre in Cleveland Heights. In To the Orchard, college student Rachel Bergman reveals her sexual identity to her Orthodox Jewish father, who also is struggling with his own hidden past. In coming to terms with each other--and themselves--the pair must reconcile the conflicting pulls of tradition and individual desire. The play takes place in Brooklyn in the recent past, but incorporates dreamlike visits to turn-of-the-century England and the lost Jewish Eastern Europe. The spirits of Robert Plant and Virginia Woolf add a touch of magic realism to this intimate work about making mistakes, coming clean, and the power of history and family. The cast of To the Orchard features Robert Branch, Kelsey Angel Baehrens, Andrea Belser, and Michael Regnier.
