Review of "Matilda The Musical" at Playhouse Square

Touring ‘Matilda’ true to Dahl’s dark, delightful children’s book Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics One of the four Tony Awards won by "Matilda The Musical" in 2013 was Best Book of a Musical for playwright Dennis Kelly’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s story. The award was well deserved, for it is remarkable how well Kelly’s script captures the darkly satirical, warped and wonderful world created by Dahl – a world vividly imagined during bedtimes in millions of homes where children begged their parents for “just a few more minutes” to finish reading a most remarkable chapter. The story revolves around an ignored 5-year-old girl who uses the power of her mind and her love of books as weapons against ignorant, demoralizing, and vicious adults. Ignoring the advice from her self-absorbed mother that “looks is more important than books,” Matilda’s first impulse – like that of Lemony Snicket’s Violet Baudelaire and J.K. Rowling’s Hermione Granger from more recent novels – is to solve problems with her intelligence, deal with conflict with her imagination, and write her own narrative. “Matilda” is Dahl’s only female-centric work and is told from a child’s perspective. As a result, the world in this musical version of the book – now on national tour and on stage at Playhouse Square – is abundantly playful. And it is comprised of comically exaggerated characters like Matilda’s outrageous parents (the hilarious Quinn Mattfeld and Cassie Silva), the bullying Olympic hammerthrower-turned-psychotic headmistress Miss Trunchbull (a brilliant David Abeles in drag), and the angelic teacher Miss Honey (a silver-throated and absolutely charming Jennifer Blood). Despite Kelly’s best efforts, the writing in the musical also inherits Dahl’s unpolished prose. Talespinner Children's Theatre's inaugural PLAYground, workshops/staged readings of new plays by professional playwrights for youth audiences, will begin casting actors ages 15 and up for four new plays written by Cleveland-area playwrights. Auditions are Sunday, May 15th from 3:30pm - 9:30 pm. Ohio Shakespeare Festival is seeking to hire two Front of House Hosts for all show dates in the 2016 summer season. Part time work (12-15 hours per week), $10/hour. Applicants must be available on show dates from 5:00 pm - 8:30pm. Shows perform only Thursday-Sunday evenings. Tempest: June 31-July 17 Robin Hood: July 21-24 Macbeth: Aug 4 - 21 Duties primarily include: checking in customers, ringing up sales, customer service care, assisting House Manager with outdoor seating preparation and arrangement, helping organize and distribute programs, setting up merchandise tent, and generally supporting the House Manager. Bay Village Community Theater is holding auditions for a staged reading of George Bernard Shaw's "Overruled", a one act manners play as only GBS could write. The staged reading will be held for one night only, Sunday June 12 at 6 pm at Mojo's Coffee and More. We are looking for two men and two women, ages 30 +. Auditions will be held at Bay Village Library, 502 Cahoon Road, Bay Village, Ohio, on Monday May 9 at 7pm. We will be producing additional staged readings on the second Sunday of each month through December.
