Dobama’s thought-provoking ‘The Call’ comes collect Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics Technology has certainly made the world a smaller place. Travesties and triumphs happening in one part of the world can now be experienced from other parts and often in real time and in high definition. And as the world has become smaller we have become increasingly aware of how our personal choices have broader, perhaps global implications. We’ve learned that our disposable lifestyle impacts on the world’s ecosystem and the future of our planet. We’ve become sensitive to the fact that buying foreign products made by child labor reinforces those practices. We’ve grown mindful of how a single vote can shift domestic policy and shape the world’s politics. Or have we? Playwright Tanya Barfield thinks not. And her drama “The Call,” which premiered Off-Broadway in 2013 and is currently on stage at Dobama Theatre, serves as a wake-up call. *The Hudson Players Announce Auditions for “1776, The Musical”* The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. *1776 *puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation. It’s the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence…if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! *1776 *follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. *1776* is a funny, insightful, and compelling drama with a striking score and legendary book. It premiered on Broadway in 1969, earning warm reviews, and ran for 1,217 performances. The production was nominated for five Tony Awards and won three, including the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical was made into a film of the same name in 1972 and was revived on Broadway in 1997. Directed by Claudia Lillibridge, the *1776 *cast requires 23+ adult and teenage men and 2 adult females (although females may be considered for ensemble roles as well). Interested auditioners should prepare 32 bars of a song (please provide sheet music for the accompanist) and be prepared to read from the script. Please also wear comfortable clothes for a short dance/movement audition. Auditions will be held Sunday, November 15 and Monday, November 16 at 7:00pm at the Barlow Community Center at 41 S. What Were They Thinking: Ten Minutes with Joel Grey Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics Many old-time Clevelanders know that Oscar and Tony Award-winning showman Joel Grey was born Joel David Katz in University Heights in 1932 and cut his actor’s chops as a 9 year old in the Cleveland Play House production of “On Borrowed Time.” Some may also know that Grey’s father, Mickey Katz, was a well-known musician and novelty singer in the 1940s who created and toured with the “Borscht Capades.” It was the equivalent of a vaudeville show that featured Katz singing Yiddishized parodies of popular songs backed by a klezmer band and included a ventriloquist, a juggler, a singer, a comedian and, occasionally, his talented teenage son. The still-spry 83-year-old star of “Cabaret,” “Chicago” and many other shows was just in town for two performances of “Joel Grey: Up Close and Personal,” a 90-minute conversation about his life on the stage and screen. His show was part of the Cleveland Play House’s centennial celebration. The Cleveland Jewish News caught up with Grey shortly before his first performance. With only 10 minutes to spend together, we focused on the slice of his life that few people are familiar with: His path from the “Borscht Capades” to Broadway. Hudson Players Opens Play On! November 6, 2015

*Play On!,* directed by OCTA award winning director June Organ, is a hilarious comedy by Rick Abbot about 6 actors, a stage manager, technician, and director trying to put on a show while working with a playwright who just cannot make up her mind. The first act is the cast going through a rehearsal of Phyllis Montague’s “Murder Most Foul”. Everything seems to be going just fine in the beginning. The slip up of lines and the bickering amongst the players are nothing out of the ordinary, mostly between Saul/Dr. Forbes played by Kirk Worcester and Polly/Lady Margaret played by Sally Morris, but then an unexpected guest decides to show up at the rehearsal. Phyllis Montague, played by Sue Jeromson, has made the choice to once again change the script around, which leaves the rest of cast and crew aghast. As they struggle to get through the script for the rest of the show the antics have only just begin. The second act begins with the cast starting their dress rehearsal by coming out on stage to be over looked by the director, Gerry, played by Michael Pitt. Throughout the beginning, the players seem to be a little more relaxed, but still a little frustrated knowing that Phyllis is lurking around the stage. That frustration definitely proves true especially for Louise, who is played by Tara Haggerty and Aggie, played by Michelle Dolciato. As the rest of the act resumes, the cast is able to overcome the pressure and deliver the show as it should be….for the most part. The third act sets the audience up for opening night and everyone is feeling pretty nervous. It’s expected to be flawless, but unfortunately for the players, that’s not what happens. The final act is full of slip-ups, falls, and all kinds of commotion. As they struggle through this hilarious last act it only leads to more laughs and enjoyment for the audience, including an unexpected surprise! *Play On!** runs November 6, 7, 13, 14, 15 (matinee), 20 and 21, 2015* at the Barlow Community Center, located at 41 S.
