BIG FISH the musical Music & Lyrics by Andrew Lippa Book by John August Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the Columbia Motion Picture written by John August Directed by Joanna May Hunkins Music Directed by Anthony Trifiletti Choreographed by Monica Olejko Performance Dates: October 16-November 1 Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM, Sundays at 3:00 PM Rehearsals begin early-mid September and usually occur weekday evenings and weekend day/evening hours. Audition Dates/Times: Tuesday, July 28 & Wednesday, July 29 from 7-10 PM Call (440) 949-5200 x221 to schedule an appointment. Please prepare two short contrasting musical selections in the style of the show (contemporary musical theater). An accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music in the proper key. Perhaps you've read the novel or seen the film, but you haven't experienced Big Fish until you've seen the musical onstage! The relationship between Will and his father is strained as Will struggles to find the truth behind the larger than life tales he was told as a boy, and his father nears the end of his battle with cancer. When the fiction begins to fade and the facts of his father's life then and now become clear, Will must make peace with whom both he and his father truly are. Infused with magic and heart, Big Fish is the kind of production that reminds audiences how amazing live theatre can be! Edward Bloom (Male 30-45): Star vehicle; originally played by Norbert Leo Butz; a loving husband and father who leads a complex imaginary life with many fantasy friends; requires a strong singer-actor who ages from 15 to 60 and moves well; a huge heart, a great sense of humor and a vivid imagination (bari-tenor) Will Bloom (Male 25-35): Edward's son, a realist and a pragmatist; and the polar opposite of Edward. His journey of reconciliation with his father is the story of the musical. This is the second male lead and requires a strong actor who sings beautifully (tenor) Young Will (Male 6-10): Edward's son at an early age; inquisitive and idolizes his father. Requires a young boy who looks 6 or 7; will have several lines to memorize and a small amount of singing/dancing (tenor) Sandra Bloom (Female 30-40): Edward's wife, a loving wife who completely understands her husband and who seeks and believes in the possibility of reconciliation between her husband and son. This is the leading female role that requires an actor who ages from 18 to 60 and who is both a strong actress and singer and moves well (soprano with mix/belt) Josephine Bloom (Female 25-35): Will's wife, a lovely young woman who provides balance for Will's pragmatism. With Sandra, she supports and helps guide Will's journey toward reconciliation with his father. This supporting female role requires a strong actor-singer (mezzo with mix/belt) Karl (Male 25+): a giant, one of Edward's fantasy friends. This supporting role requires an actor who is 6'2" or over - the taller the better. Through Edward's friendship, he grows from being a 'beastly' outcast to a highly successful businessman. This supporting role requires an actor who acts, sings, has an appreciation for comic irony, and may stilt walk (bass) Amos Callaway (Male 30+): a werewolf, another of Edward's fantasy friends. Masquerading as a ringmaster of a brokendown circus, he begins as Edward's tormentor but then, through Edward's acceptance, he accepts himself and becomes highly successful. This supporting role requires a comic actor who sings and moves well (baritone) Don Price (Male 25-40): Edward's childhood frenemy, an early buddy, bully and rival for Sandra's hand. This supporting role requires a strong actor with a comic sensibility, a good singer and has movement skills (baritone) Zacky Price (Male 25-40): Don's younger brother, nerdy and always tagging along. This supporting role requires a strong actor with a comic sensibility, a good singer and has movement skills (baritone) The Witch (Female 18+): the earliest and most fantastic of Edward's "imaginary" acquaintances who shows him how he'll die. This supporting role requires a strong singer-dancer with commanding presence (mezzo with high belt) Jenny Hill (Female 25-40): the other woman, one of Edward's early childhood friends who he forgets but then who later becomes the recipient of his kindness. This supporting role also requires a good actress, singer, and mover who ages from 18 to 60 (mezzo with mix/belt) Dr. Bennett (Male 40+): Edward's physician, the experienced and wise country doctor. Singing a plus, but not required. A Note About The Ensemble: Many of the above characters will double as ensemble taking on wedding guests, townspeople, circus performers, etc. A small number of actors may be added to fill out featured ensemble roles including the Mayor of Ashton, Fisherman and Alabama Lambs.
