Jovialities Entertainment Services will be holding auditions for new actors to join our improv troupe. Jovialities is an interactive Murder Mystery Company. We are currently looking for actors who can portray a variety of characters. All actors will receive compensation for performances. Review of "The Spitfire Grill" at Beck Center for the Arts

Beck Center saves ‘Spitfire Grill’ from itself Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics Some musicals have an impressive literary pedigree. The Tony Award-winning “Cats” is based on the whimsical verse of poet T.S. Eliot. “South Pacific” is an adaptation of James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. “The Spitfire Grill,” on stage at the Beck Center for the Arts, seems inspired by Hallmark. Every sentiment in this show has a song with a greeting card title and temperament absconded from the “condolence” and “inspiration” racks, including “When Hope Goes,” “Come Alive Again” and “Shine.” And every song is written with the same kind of wholesome, emotion-laden prose solely intended to pull at a heart-string or give voice to those private moments in our lives or serve up a plain-spoken and highly digestible truth. The lyrics are accompanied by the resonating sound of string instruments only – a keyboard, violin, cello and guitar – just in case the words alone don’t bring you to tears or inspire a post-show phone call to a neglected loved one. In truth, “The Spitfire Grill” is based on a 1996 film written by Lee David Zlotoff – a film that critic Roger Ebert described as “unabashedly manipulative,” which it is, and others have likened to “Fried Green Tomatoes” and “Steel Magnolias.” The movie served as the basis for the 2001 Off-Broadway musical production of the same name with music and lyrics by James Valcq and Fred Alley. Though short-lived, that production was better able to tap the poignancy embedded in the material than the film ever could. The current Beck Center rendition, which is really quite lovely under director William Roudebush’s artistic vision, does so even more. Mystery, drama combine for engaging 'Night of January 16th at Western Reserve Playhouse by April Helms | Special Products Editor Published: September 18, 2015 12:00AM With most plays, the audience does not get to choose the ending. But a select group of the audience will become the jury for Western Reserve Playhouse's last show of its summer season, "Night of January 16th." Their decision toward the end of the show -- whether or not they felt that Karen Andre (played by Beth Gaiser) was guilty or not of murdering her longtime lover and boss -- will determine how the show would end."Night of January 16th," by Ayn Rand, directed by Brian Westerley, opened Sept. 11. The entire play is set in a courtroom, with Judge Heath presiding (the judge is played by Tom Stephan and Scott K. Davis on different nights). The audience listens to the various witnesses, and the arguments of the prosecutor, District Attorney Flint (Meg Hopp) and Defense Attorney Stevens (Daniel Colaner). The question on everyone's mind is whether Bjorn Faulkner, a business tycoon swimming in a sea of debt and possible fraud charges, committed suicide or was murdered. Some of the more memorable witnesses included Magda (Harriet DeVeto), Faulkner's devoted housekeeper, who made no effort to hide her disdain for Karen; Jungquist (Sally Suren), Faulkner's bookkeeper who is on better terms with Karen; and a surprise appearance by Faulkner's young widow Nancy Lee (Elizabeth Allard).Just when Karen herself starts testifying, Regan (Ron Young), an infamous criminal arrives on the scene with an interesting twist to the story, and Nancy Lee's father Whitfield (David Hundertmark) unwittingly adds a few wrinkles himself to the case."It is a small part for me, but I love it," said Stephan, a Stow resident. "I get to see everything the audience sees, and hear everything the audience hears."Stephan said he formed a bit of a bias regarding the fictional case fairly early on, "which a real judge should not do," but said the role was an enjoyable one.The audience on opening night seemed to enjoy the show and could be heard discussing the result afterwards."It was excellent," said Karen Phillips of Cuyahoga Falls, who came with her husband John. "I think my favorite was the first Swedish lady [Magda], she was so good. But the whole cast was excellent."The show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through Sept. 26. Akron Beacon Journal Theatre review: Courtroom whodunit is suspenseful in Ayn Rand’s ‘Night of January 16th’ at Western Reserve Playhouse by Kerry Clawson The courtroom whodunit Night of January 16th keeps the suspense high as several characters are introduced who had plenty of motive to kill despotic businessman Bjorn Faulkner. Director Brian Westerley works with a strong cast at Western Reserve Playhouse, led largely by a handful of award-winning local actors who have starred regularly on the Weathervane stage: Meg Hopp as tough district attorney Flint, Daniel Colaner as smooth-talking defense attorney Stevens, Tom Stephan and Scott Davis alternating as sardonic Judge Heath and Harriet DeVeto as the passionately angry servant Magda. Playwright Ayn Rand (1905-1982) creates several characters of both comical and questionable nature in this murder trial in which Faulkner’s longtime mistress Karen is on the hot seat. Actress Beth Gaiser does a good job portraying her as a woman who has plenty to hide but can’t contain several angry outbursts during the trial. Barry Wakser plays private investigator Van Fleet, who may just be an unreliable witness considering he spies on people from bars. And Patrick Wilson is goofy as inspector Sweeney, the first cop on the scene of the crime who seems a little too enamored of Faulkner and his mistress’s legendary high-class lifestyle. DeVeto is hilarious as housekeeper Magda, who gives what she perceives as disgusting details about Faulkner and Karen’s longtime affair. DeVeto is at her most fun when she gives “other woman” Karen the evil eye in court. The play, written by Russian-born American novelist, philosopher, playwright and screenwriter Rand, premiered in 1934 in Los Angeles, played on Broadway in 1935-1936 and was subsequently revived Off-Broadway in 1973 as Penthouse Legend. It was inspired by the real-life story of Swedish “Match King” Ivar Kreuger, who reportedly committed suicide in Paris in 1932. In Night of January 16th, Faulkner has fallen to his death from the penthouse of the building he owned. But was it murder or suicide?In a unique twist, nine members of the audience are picked each night to serve as jurors. They control the play’s ending by deciding whether Karen is guilty or not. This production is the last of Western Reserve Playhouse’s summer season, which takes place in a large barn in Bath. Sue Snyder, Jack Steele and Jim Gremba created the courtroom set, consisting of the judge’s bench with defense and prosecution tables on each side.We learn that this businessman was a ruthless swindler who enjoyed ruling over both the women and the business people in his life.One awkward moment occurs when Colaner’s Stevens interrupts the trial to read a note from a source unknown to the audience, asking Stevens to stall the proceedings until this person arrives. When Karen hears that, she’s in a big hurry to finish up her testimony and later we find out why. As in most good murder mysteries, there’s a love triangle and numerous people with conflicting interests from Faulkner’s life. Among them are Faulkner’s young American wife Nancy Lee (Elizabeth Allard), who has a superiority complex; and her rich daddy, Whitfield, played by David Hundertmark. And what’s a murder mystery without a mobster thrown in for good measure? That character, Regan, is played as a hothead by the talented Ron Young.
