The Dark Room is an ongoing event held on the second Tuesday of each month. The Dark Room affords emerging and veteran playwrights the space and resources to develop new works. The Hudson Players announce auditions for The People vs. Friar Laurence, The Man Who Killed Romeo and Juliet

The Hudson Players will hold open auditions for the brand new, fast-paced, slapstick, musical comedy The People vs. Friar Laurence: The Man Who Killed Romeo and Juliet by Ron West and Phil Swann on Sunday and Monday, February 14 and 15 at 7pm each night. Call backs, if needed will be Tuesday, February 16. Auditions will be held at the Barlow Community Center - 41 S. Oviatt St., Hudson, OH 44236. Director, Fig Jankowski is looking for nine versatile actors (6 male, 3 female) to portray the variety of characters found in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in a new light. This vaudeville-style musical comedy is a present-day retake on Shakespeare's famous tale, told from the point of view of Friar Laurence, and will require all but one actor to play multiple roles, but will not feature typical Shakespearean accents (aside from one fellow, who jokingly attempts a few phrases from the Bard). Please come prepared to sing 32 bars of a light-hearted or humorous song - sheet music in the correct key must be provided for the accompanist; no a cappella auditions. (Songs from the show are welcome, but not required.) Those auditioning will also be asked to participate in a short dance/movement exercise and a cold reading from the script covering a variety of characters. A PERUSAL SCRIPT IS AVAILABLE AT THE HUDSON LIBRARY (this production will use alternatives to the adult language found in the original script). This fast-paced, slapstick, musical comedy will be making its Ohio debut with the Hudson Players performances on April 29, 30, May 6, 7, 13, 14, 15*, 20 & 21! Beck Center for the Arts Youth Theater, one of the oldest continuously running Youth Theaters in the country, is holding auditions on September 19 & 20, 2016 for our final production of our 67th Anniversary Season: BIG, THE MUSICAL Book by John Weidman Music by David Shire Lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. Based on the Twentieth Century Fox film Big, written by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg Directed by Russel Stich Musical Direction by Matthew Dolan Choreography by Rebecca Frick The Story: The classic 1987 motion picture fantasy bursts onto the stage in this unforgettable theatrical experience. Josh Baskin is sick of being an awkward kid. At a carnival, he makes a wish to the Zoltar machine to become "big". To his shock, his wish is granted. After an understandably awkward beginning, Josh is forced to do "adult" things like getting a job and a girlfriend. In the end he discovers there's much more to being an adult than he's bargained for, and learns we must all grow up at our own pace, in our own time. This role will function as a department head, will be a core part of the CPT staff and will make a meaningful contribution to life at CPT and its success. Job Description CPT is experiencing rapid growth while trying to maintain an intimate, resilient, team-driven staff. In response, it has created a new role, Box Officer Manager (BOM) who is the first and primary contact for CPT patrons. As a result, CPT is looking for an upbeat, charming, helpful person to engage with patrons by phone and in person and get them excited about their CPT experience. This role is responsible for managing and recording box office transactions including online ticketing, and production and season ticket reporting. The BOM will manage the CPT ticketing and CRM database. This role also provides general reception duties for the organization, some clerical tasks and provides support for house managers, bartenders and other front of house staff. This role will also engage with donors around benefit events in the off-season. Like all staff members, the role will actively contribute to the working environment and culture at CPT and the success of the organization. This employee will report to the General Manager and must frequently exercise independent judgment, initiative and the ability to constantly re-prioritize competing responsibilities. Work week is 40+ hours, with regular evenings and weekends required October through June. Pay ranges from $26,000 to $28,000 depending on experience and includes health benefits. CPT seeks to fill the position by April 1, 2016. Final Weekend For Workshop Players' "The Laramie Project"

Our audiences have loved this production. Don't miss the final weekend. Workshop Players present The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman, directed by Rebecca Frick. Laramie, Wyoming, population 26,687. Laramie, often referred to as the “gem city of the plains”, was the site of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21 year-old gay University of Wyoming student. On October 6, 1998, he was found tied to a buck fence, beaten and unconscious. *The Laramie Project* is a play by Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theatre Project. “On November 14, 1998, members of Tectonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie, Wyoming, and conducted interviews with the people of the town.” The play is “edited from those interviews, as well as from journal entries by members of the company.” (The Laramie Project, "Introduction") The Play is about the town of Laramie, its citizens, and their reaction to Matthew Shepard’s murder. As one of the investigating officers, Sergeant Hing stated: “How could this happen? I—I think a lot of people just don’t understand, and even I don’t really understand, how someone can do something like that. We have one of the most vocal populations of gay people in the state . . . and it’s pretty much: Live and let live.” The 9 actors in the cast portray 60+ characters. Playwrights Local 4181 (playwrightslocal.org) is a new playwrights' center based at Waterloo Arts in Collinwood that fosters and presents plays by local writers. We're in the process of building a database of directors who are interested in working with us on various projects, e.g. staged readings, workshops, productions, and festivals. Our goal is to create a pool of interested and capable directors from which to draw in the future. Our next set of openings involves a series of staged readings planned for April 15-17. Review of "Into the Woods" at Lakeland CIvic Theatre

Lakeland Civic Theatre offers a tepid ‘Into the Woods’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics Since the 1970s, composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim has been transforming all that is simple and predictable and harmonious in American musical theater into something that is more of an acquired taste. Some theatregoers find his creativity to be outside their comfort zone and beyond the reach of their archaic expectations for musicals. Others, like Lakeland Civic Theatre artistic director Martin Friedman, appreciate how Sondheim fills the air with a dense stream of words and images, and places a disorienting discord beneath his melodies. His stories are complex, as are the people who inhabit them. And “Into the Woods” – currently on stage at Lakeland Civic Theatre – bears all these theatrical trademarks. Friedman understands this.
